I've been giving it a spin and really like it - you guys have done a great job! The only minor quibble I have is the startup time which is a little longer than some of the other players (smplayer, vlc primarily) I use. But that's a very minor issue. I like the playlist feature and enjoy the tab interface. Once loaded its as snappy as any other mplayer frontend I've used. Again, great work!

Thank you very much bslagowski!
Sakrag has actually worked on the startup time recently, and apparently he's been able to cut the startup time in half.

2. Aura is a lot more than just an mplayer frontend. In fact I would like it to have other backends than mplayer.
Now if you do that then I'll take a serious look into it. For now I just use mplayer for videos and AmaroK for everything else. Good luck with it though! Competition is the spice of life!

That is how I used to be and decided I would rather have it all in one. That is probably why we actually do have some similarities between our playlist (and planned features) and AmaroK.

Just installed it and I like it so far.
1) really like the folder view in the playlist
2) of course the tabs for playlists, etc are great.
3) I like the filter option, but cant seem to just click on a column to sort by title, artist, album, etc?
4) is there a way to change the audio background images?
Just giving some feedback...

Hey thanks for the feedback, keep it coming!
1) Yah I use that extensively, it is our precursor to a full media collection.
3) That has been partially fixed already, just not released. My main issue is: if you click, say "artist", i would like it to not only sort by artist but also by track number, and also for adding tracks to add them in the correct order (and for movies with a track number in the filename, adding those correctly). The current fix will do the default and straight up sort it, (hopefully it will be released soon, maybe a month...).
4) I'm assuming you mean the cover art. Currently we search the actual music file for cover art and if we cant find it there we look for a file named "cover.jpg" or "cover.png" in the same folder as the file, and last if we can't find anything we use a blank album cover image borrowed from amarok. To change it you either have to use another program to actually change the album art embedded in the file, or if there isn't album art embedded in the file you can add a "cover.jpg" or a "cover.png" to the folder. Eventually we may also support other standards, such as the ones that itunes or windows media player uses.

^^
perhaps it should just use any image in the current folder if it doesn't find embeded cover art or a file name cover.jpg cover.png... some of my albums arts have weird names or they are named after the album itself.

I've thought about it, and will probably do that eventually. ...I would bet some of your cover art with weird names is based off of a standard that uses a GUID (iTunes, windows media player maybe?), which I'm hoping to add support for sometime also.

Don't forget to vote in the AUR if you like AuraMP!

Can we have config files in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME please?

I don't know if this was discussed before, but when I click on a file, I would like it to open aura and for it to start playing the said file. This currently doesn't function this way. maybe it is in one of the options somewhere.
edit: well it seems that I was wrong. Just tried it again and it works on some of my videos but not all.

What file extensions don't work? I probably need to update the .desktop file
MPlayer supports a massive amount of video and audio codecs, and I haven't gotten them all associated yet.
Get me the file extensions, and I'll have them in an update by the end of the day.

here's a list of the file formats that would not play automatically:

---dx50
mp4

I updated it for you, let me know if it works now.
I think I fixed it, but there's always I chance I still messed up.
Those file types aren't even in the video list for kde's .desktop editor. I had to manually add them using a text editor.

We can change it to that. It takes 2 seconds to fix.

aura.tar isn't passing it's md5sum check :S
edit: Damn you yaourt for sending me mixed signals. I downloaded the tarball manually and it pkg'ed up fine.

Nope that didn't seem to fix the issue for me. When I click on a movie file, like the types I've listed, the program just opens and sits idle. The execution log goes something like this:
Sun Sep 20 00:59:04 CDT 2009: Starting MPlayer...
Sun Sep 20 00:59:04 CDT 2009: Loading MPlayer with arguments [file:///Backup/Movies/History%20of%20the%20World%20-%20Part%201/History%20of%20the%20World%20-%20Part%201.avi, -wid, 41943465, -cache, 2048, -cache-min, 20, -cache-seek-min, 50, -ao, alsa, -delay, -0.0, -channels, 2, -vo, xv, -adapter, 1, -noframedrop, -vf, pp,screenshot, -nokeepaspect, -identify, -noquiet, -slave, -prefer-ipv4, -colorkey, 197379]
Sun Sep 20 00:59:04 CDT 2009: State change IDLE -> CONNECTING
Sun Sep 20 00:59:04 CDT 2009: MPlayer exited with code 0
Sun Sep 20 00:59:04 CDT 2009: State change CONNECTING -> IDLE
on a side note: orientation is spelled wrong in the preferences.

nah I just download a lot of music and cover art seems to come in all diff naming schemes... perhaps that is how they were originally generated though... not sure.

Wow!
I installed Aura Media Player today, and I instantly fell in love with it.
The interface is beautiful, intuitive and very informative without being cluttered..
This is the first front end that in my opinion makes mplayer usable as a music player.
One feature that would be very useful for me, is a column in the playlist for filename (filename only, and maybe filename with path.) because of a mixed
collection of music, some sorted by tags, other by filename only, without tags.
AuraMP is now officially my favourite MPlayer Front End :-D

Thanks! Glad that you liked it so much.
Adding a column for file name should be pretty trivial, you should see it sometime soon.

It looks like according to the execution log that mplayer is your problem (or maybe an argument we are passing mplayer). Try running the video from the command line with mplayer and then also try it with the arguments that we use (you can just copy and paste the stuff between the brackets after "Loading MPlayer with arguments".

I have done some more analysis of memory management on my system. I have 8Gb of ram. It looks like according to Java, I have lots of free ram, so it creates a heap space of 200mb but only needs around 10mb of that heap space. My heap space usage slowing grows, until a few minutes later, the jvm performs a garbage collect. This garbage collect sends my cpu utilization to just above 1% for a split second...
So it looks like, on my system, that I only need around 40mb or so of ram for Aura, but the jvm has determined that it is more efficient to use more memory. These things can be tuned through the jvm, so we should be able to provide options within aura for minimizing ram or cpu usage.
...Also on my eee (a very weak system...) Aura shows up as using only 35mb of ram. Point should also be, when dealing with java, don't always take the reported memory usage at face value.

If your guys intention is to make a full fledge media player one that can compete with Amarok for playing music... then I would suggest making sure that it is capable of handling super large music libraries 50k+ songs... for example support for mysql as a database and/or other tricks that make handling of such large of a music collection not bog down the player to a slow crawl. Also command line options such as:
amarok --play --load file (adds the designated file to the playlist and immediately begins playing it)
amarok --append file(s)/folder (appends the file or files or folder of files to a the bottom of the current playlist)
amaro --queue file(s)/folder (appends the file or files or folder of files to the top of the current playlist after the current playing song)
