[SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

Hello. My English is very poor, warning! :-P

I have a laptop computer with a Nvidia 9600M GT graphic card , with a resolution native 1680x1050 and 60Hz (VertRefresh). The problem that I have is that although it modifies the values in xorg.conf, I believe that HAL omits them and it puts its refresh for 50Hz. I would like to force my 60Hz native.
PD: The driver that I use is nvidia and I configured xorg.conf through nvidia-xconfig.

I hope if somebody can help me, thank you!

Re: [SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

Find the monitor section of your xorg.conf and add/edit the following to:

    VertRefresh    60

Hmm... after re-reading your post it seems that you have done this and that HAL or xorg is not abiding by it? If that is the case... not sure what the fix is.

It's known that a 60Hz refresh rate will commonly be written as 50, even though it is being used properly

Re: [SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

are you using KDE? Kde seems to think most monitors can only run at 50hz.  if your monitor has display buttons in the front, see if  you find a status or info section, it should tell you the actual refresh rate.  or check the nvidia settings utility, that also should display the correct rate.

I didnt know? sad

it seems ilke an error to me, since the monitor and nvidia settings both report my correct rate (60hz) while kde (both 3.5 and now 4.3.1) show 50hz in the display utility.  Is this documented somewhere?

edit to add i dont know what alehox is using..

No, I'm not using KDE. I use Gnome and fluxbox at the moment.

Re: [SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

if it's not on your menus,  you can type nvidia-settings on a terminal.  it's part of the nvidia-utils package.

[edit] once you launch nvidia-settings, you can check your current settings by going to your GPU section and looking for your monitor listing.

then click the line Xserver display configuration, which will let you select the 60hz from xorg.conf, and then applying will make the monitor switch (if necessary). you can then go back to the monitor part of your gpu section, and it will show you changes (if any)

I have the exact same thing, it's because nvidia doesn't use randr.

BTW, I'm on gnome

I did it.
In "X Server display configuration" section I've put my native resolution (1680x1050 and 60Hz).
Click in "Apply" and "Save to X configuration file".
Reboot.
I've run nvidia-settings again and in "DFP-0 - (CMO)" subsection under "GPU 0 - (Geforce 9600M GT)" section I see my refresh rate: 59,88Hz.

In the gnome's generic screen utility I see 50Hz yet, but I think it's allright now and my refresh rate is correct.

¿Is there any way to see 60Hz in the gnome's generic screen utility? Perhaps it detects 59,88Hz and it displays 50Hz instead 60Hz. ¿Maybe a little bug?

PD: thank you very much

See DynamicTwinView option - makes Gnome show the correct refresh rate, rather than 50hz.

oh oh! perfect! Thank you brebs!

I write this code line:

Option "DynamicTwinView" "0"

below this code line:

Option "TwinView" "0"

and now gnome's utility show 60Hz! Thank you very much!

On the other hand, when I run nvidia-settings command, in the "X Server Display Configuration" doesn't show anything, just the error message: "Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page: Dynamic TwinView is disabled on screen 0." I think it's normal.

Very useful the breb's link and this one: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … dix-g.html

Re: [SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

wow, that seems like an obscure option.  I can verify kde also shows 60hz now on the settings manager.  Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Force 60Hz instead 50Hz

So, what does this option do for connecting a second monitor or a projector after X has been started and without adding it the the xorg.conf file? I can live with the incorrect refresh rate reporting but not being able to dynamically add/remove displays is a problem.

Perfect! XFCE4 shows 60Hz too.
