dhcpcd timed out

Hi,

Yes I guess one could say I'm new to Archlinux and this forum. I made the switch from Ubuntu to Arch because of the fact I like to keep it "rolling" big_smile.

This is the second time I installed arch, the first time I had both gnome and KDE running. The reason I reinstalled (and registered on this forum) is because of this:

50% of the time dhcpcd doesn't work and says: "dhcpcd timed out". If I then type in terminal or konsole: /etc/rc.d/network restart also 50% this doesn't work and I have to retype it (multiple times).

The logs: /var/log/messages.log and /var/log/everything.log don't give any info regarding dhcpcd other than: "dhcpcd timed out"

If i type dhcpcd -d eth0 I get:
dhcpcd: eth0: executing '/usr/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason PREINIT
dhcpcd: eth0: executing '/usr/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason NOCARRIER
dhcpcd: eth0: timed out

I've already googled alot! And i've also read both the "beginners guide" and "Configuring Network guide"

Reinstalling Arch did not work so any help would be greatly appreciated.. please help!

Re: dhcpcd timed out

What kind of network is it?

Wired? (10 base-t, 100, 1000?)
Wireless? (WEP, WPA, managed, ad-hoc?)
PPP?  (PPPoE, [god forbid] Dial-up?)

Re: dhcpcd timed out

Thanx for the reply,

I have a gigabit lan card, wired to a netgear maxrange router which only supports up to 100mps if i'm not mistaking. Oh and the connection works in windows.

Re: dhcpcd timed out

Have you tried restarting the router?  It really drops dhcpcd times for me.

Re: dhcpcd timed out

Heey thanks for your reply, Yes I did restart the router.. and for now it worked I have a connection. The only thing is that I almost know for sure I will have to this over and over again to get a connection.. and I don't like that. Is there anyone here with a solution to solve this problem e.g. a way edit one of the rc files or hosts file?

Re: dhcpcd timed out

Maybe try dhclient as a workaround. I have been seeing some complaints about the latest dhcpcd being flaky.

pacman -Sy dhclient

Re: dhcpcd timed out

I just installed dhclient... i've tried that before and back then it did not help. For now it seems te be working but i don't know how long it will last.
I figured that maybe it also had to do with a misconfiguration of the hostsfile (wrong hostname)... oops my fault neutral

If it stops working again ill get back on this.. Thanks for the help! smile
