Hello all!
This morning, I booted up my Eee PC 904HA, and fsck came up. It stated at first that the filesystem check had failed, and told me to enter the root password. I did, and ran fsck again. It deleted a bad inode as part of the process. This laptop has had a failed check before, but it didn't come out so lucky. I had lost availible data from the hard drive and reinstall was needed. This time, it recovered after deletion of the inode. This all has happened randomly. (Usually right before I need my laptop ) and I am wondering if a hardware failure is imminent,
My question: Should I be expecting a total hard drive failure in the future? Or will no hard drive failure happen at all?

Install smartmontools, run 'smartctl -t long /dev/sda', wait accordingly, and post the output of 'smartctl -a /dev/sda'.

There is also a frontend, GSmartControl. Quite a nice application.

Alright, I ran smartctl, and here is the output.

Well, "completed without error" certainly sounds good. There are 3 defective sectors that got replaced at one point, which I wouldn't worry too much about... but I'd consider anything above 50°C too hot for a normal harddisk (I know some 15000rpm SCSI server disks that are fine with >60, but that's a different league).
Is there any way you could get better airflow to that netbook? So far it looks alright, but keep an eye on those temperatures, maybe clean the fan and exhaust.

Thanks byte,
I will try to get as much airflow to the netbook as possible. One thing that I noticed, is that the area where the hard drive is does not have a fan to take hot air away, only vents.

o_O, "failing now" is certainly not a good indication. The value is well above the indicated threshold. You should really make backups NOW. Also, could you post what
sudo hdsentinel /dev/sda
outputs?

Sounds like I will be making backups, as i presumed.
Anyways, hdsentinel printed the following

Well, the stuff that is printed in addition to what we already know from smartctl doesn't look bad. Your main problem seems to be the heat, which isn't converted to a readable value in the second measurement. Were you able to do something about it? You should certainly check it from time to time and under different conditions. Maybe you can get this under control.
