andrewzorn: No, it's just so extraordinary case - i wouldn't figure it out quickly.
But it's strange you haven't noticed such poor performance after installing xcompmgr. Well, never mind, i haven't used xcompmgr - so i can't judge.

well i am yet to have working sound, video, games, anything.
firefox is like the most advanced thing im using right now (no flash yet either)
so the animated tilda was the only thing that showed bad performance

I installed catalyst version 9.9.1 but it doesn't be able to use high resolution modes. It stops at 1280x800 (I'm using HD3650). This was described as a bug in the unofficial ATI wiki for the preceding version, I presume it still is (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Troubleshooting). Its too bad because using catalyst drastically improves my battery time. It only seems to happen with specific cards too.
Anyone know a workaround/fix for this?

It sounds like a lot of people are confused as to what things do. I just want to state what I know to help clear up some this confusion.
The xorg-maximize-fix has nothing really to do with fixing "Maximize" or "Minimize. That was a really bad name for that package.
The package should be called. xorg-server-No-backfill-patch
It is needed with some chipsets like my HD3650. It fixes the problems that happen with "ANY" composite manager not just Kwin but also Compiz, xcompmgr, the one in Xface and any other you can think of. Ya, if you use a composite manager your whole computer will lock up when you resize a window change desktop or even move a window around. So, it dose "Fix Maximize" but also a whole bunch of other stuff.
Also, it seems everybody has taken to using glxgears as a benchmark. I use to think it would give me a good idea about how well my video driver was working too. However, it doesn't. It really doesn't matter at all what FPS you get in glsgears. Graphics cards and video games are way, way more complex then glxgears. If you see FPS drop or go up in glxgears that doesn't meen at all that your going to get better or worse 3D performance in real video games.
Case and point.
Chipset HD3650
Catalyst 9.9.1
xorg-maximize-fix
Kernel 2.6.30
With out xcompmgr
glxgears ~3,300 FPS
Nexuiz native 1680x1050 | Effects set to Normal | all other setting default.
100 - 200 FPS | most of the time ~150 FPS | With a whole lot going on ~80 - 90 FPS
----------------------------------------------------------
With xcompmgr ON
glxgears ~295 FPS
Nexuiz native 1680x1050 | Effects set to Normal | all other setting default.
100 - 200 FPS | most of the time ~150 FPS | With a whole lot going on ~80 - 90 FPS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
FOR REAL ^ There is a MAJOR differents in glxgear's FPS. About 11 Times slower with xcompmgr ON,
However, in real game play there is no difference at all. "Maybe" ~10 FPS slower with xcompmgr on.
Ok now that that is out of the way. Lets all start using Supertuxracer or Nexuiz as a benchmark.
If you have problems with Kwin or Compiz or Xcompmgr or any other composit manager then you need to use the xorg-Maximize-Fix patched Xserver.
--------------------------------------------
One more thing I have the new Catalyst 9.9.1, xorg-maximize-fix, and kernel 2.6.30 installed. I have a HD3650 and my screen resolution is at native 1680x1050. So, I hope you get that fixed siell. I posted my xorg.conf a few pages back.

You got me interested to install the patched xorg . Compiz ran fine before installing the fixed xorg anyway .
So I tested glxgears and videos after installing the patched xorg . The problem is still there . I don't care about FPS as I don't run games anyway . But the symptoms of the bug are :
1) Full cpu usage on one of the cores of the CPU when running glxgears(and very low FPS which I don't care about .
2) Videos use a lot of cpu or freeze .
That's when xcompmgr running . Compiz is working just fine .
So , to sum up :
1) I see a bug in catalyst induced by xcompmgr usage .
2) The bug is not fixed by xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix .
3) The bug does not affect Compiz .
English is not my native language .

Hey guys
I've had a lot of trouble getting my mobile HD3650 to work with the catalyst drivers. Each time i started X i was confronted with a black screen. After some research in the log i found out that the fglrx driver was crashing and locking up my system.
2 days of googling gave me the 'aticonfig --acpi-services=off' command. This magically solved my problems!
Might be worth a shot if your X still fails to boot up.

Hm. Looks like Glxgears is not a Benchmark for real. (Though I know that already :-D )
This is a really good example. But I don't think, that stops people from posting glxgears fps.

I got blank screen when I start x. I got no idea why.
I removed old xf86-ati-git drivers and all of those git drivers needed for it (mesa-git libgl-git etc) and installed original ones.
Then I removed pacman -Rd xorg-server, installed xorg-setver-catalyst-maximize-fix from aur.
After that I installed catalyst-utils and catalyst for my kernel version (2.6.31).
I configured my xorg with aticonfig, and I got blank screen after startx and can't do anything, even can't switch to vc2 and kill xorg.

Hum, ya I seem to have the same problem.
with xcompmgr OFF
one CPU core is at 98% and the other 3% and they switch loads like every I don't know long ?~ 30 sec's
with xompmgr ON
one CPU core is at 100% and the other at 0% and they switch loads like every 3 sec's
However, still no effect in game play but maybe my CPU if freaking out the whole time in the background. I can't tell when I am playing the game. I love these days of multi-core CPUs Remember the old days when if your one CPU core was freaking out your whole computer would lock up. I'm glad that craziness is over with.
I can't wait for the day that you can have TWO Xservers running at the same time. Boy that would be nice.

Ya, boy I try and tell everyone I can about that. I too have an HD3650 and all of us have to turn of acpi. It took me 2 1/2 weeks to find this out. At lest it only took you 2 days
I think we need to add that to the catalyst WiKi so no one ells has to go through that endless headache. I spent toughs 2.5 weeks editing the xorg.conf a billion times.

That sounds like the same symptom we HD3650 users get when we don't turn off acpi.
If you have a HD3650 you need to run this command for sure... sudo aticonfig --acpi-services=off
If you don't have a HD3650. Then you can find out what is wrong by running this command.
This will give you the all the errors form the last time xorg tried to start and put them in the file xorg_error_log.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE | tee xorg_error_log.txt
This will give you all the warnings from the last time xorg tried to start and put them in the file xorg_warning_log.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW | tee xorg_warning_log.txt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I was getting this Warrning....

But I was thinking.... Hum... """ (WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) * """
So I reinstalled the Kernel and all is well.
Just a thing to keep in mind if you have problems.
Also, if you install a new Kernel and you use VirtualBox you need to rebuild the module.... vbox_build_module and reboot. Otherwise Catalyst will conflict with it and give an error something to the effect of "Conflicting Kernel Module Hardware acceleration disabled".

The best driver in terms of quality and stability is the proprietary NVIDIA .
Catalyst performs well If you carefully avoid all the 'minor!' bugs . I had to hard-reset my laptop this week many times . I never had to do that in my desktop for years (NVIDIA FX5200 then GT6600) .

Excellent depends on what you compare with, as is what a minor bug is.
I consider these problems to be quite huge:
* Problems with new kernels, I know it's finally working again without too many patches and dmesg output, but it will most likely not stay that way for long.
* Extreme video tearing with XV, switching to opengl playback is not an option for me.
* Wine graphics very buggy in some situations with catalyst.
* Where is the vdpau equivalent
This was my experience with hd4850 since that chip was released to a week ago, switched to nVidia 250gts now, all above problems gone and none added (so far).
Never had a crash or black screen caused by the catalyst driver though.
The opensource driver is starting to get interesting now though, I just hope they'll manage to get decent performance and not just a "it's working" state. I'd love that for my ati based laptop.

You missed '!' after the word minor . I don't consider the issues I'm having minor of course . Not being able to use something lightweight like xcompmgr in a HD 4xxx is just BS (I could have done this with a mediocre integrated model) .
Never had a crash or black screen caused by the catalyst driver though.
I never had sudden crashes or frozen state while running X . The freezes and blank screens only happened when trying to start X or exit from an X session(e.g exiting a 2nd X session) .

Whoops, misunderstood the '!'.
