Pacman, nothing found in syncdb

I've been following the instructions on the beginners guide on how to install x and alsa, but whenever i do pacmand -S whatever it says its not found in sync db. I'm new and I don't know how to fix this. I figured since the stuff was in the beginners guide, that it would just install no problem, do i have to update something?

# pacman -Syu
