XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Since the last update, XOrg has been using 99% of my CPU power for about three minutes after it is started. This happens whether I am using Slim, console login, whatever; I checked with top and it is definitely X that is using up the CPU power. This happens on Debian as well as Arch.

Here is my Xorg.0.log:

_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/skylark:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Try to disable Input Hotplugging and see if that helps.  Add:

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
   EndSection

To xorg.conf.  I had to disable it myself because it wasn't playing nice with Keytouch.

N/M, the problem disappeared with the Xorg upgrade. WTG devs.

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Update: It's back. Apparently the issue has something to do with LXDE, because it only occurs with an LXDE session - nothing else. I think lxsession-lite is doing something weird.

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Something is fishy with the new xorg. I've been noticing increased CPU usage (openbox)

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

It's not the new Xorg, this happened with the old Xorg too, and it happens only with LXDE.

+1 for me on that note.

I've noticed a HUGE increase (up to 70-80% cpu usage) since the Xorg update in openbox.  The symptoms mostly occur with video handling.  All my apps take a long time to draw when opening and large or fullscreen videos are not even viewable they are so choppy.  Not to mention the random lockup I had earlier today.  Definitely something screwy with this last update.

Just for posterity these issues were, at least in my case, not once present with the old Xorg.

I'm seeing from 20 % to 40+ % CPU usage while doing nothing. Also didn't happen with old Xorg.
It could be intel drivers and the current lack of TTM..

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

I did some tweaking to xorg.conf and I think I fixed my issue.

First I commented out the rgbpath line:

Section "Files"
    #RgbPath "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Next I disabled loading of 2 modules, "glx" and "record"

Section "Module"
    #Load "glx"
    #Load "record"
    Load "GLcore"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "dbe"
    Load "xtrap"
    Load "dri"
    Load "freetype"
EndSection

Then, in the "Device" section, I uncommented the "NoAccel" line:

Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"
        ### [arg]: arg optional
        Option "NoAccel" "true"
        #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorKey" # <i>
        #Option "CacheLines" # <i>
        #Option "Dac6Bit" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DRI" # "true"
        #Option "NoDDC" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ShowCache" # [<bool>]
        #Option "XvMCSurfaces" # <i>
        #Option "PageFlip" # [<bool>]
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Finally I added the next section as suggested in another post which I unfortunately do not remember the url to:

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection

I added the "AutoAddDevices" flag as per suggested in another post I read and I disabled the loading of the "record" module because xorg was complaining that it didn't exist.  The changes I made that I think made the biggest difference were disabling acceleration and glx.  Everything seems back to normal.  I am going to uncomment the "DRI" section and see if it still functions well.  Hope this helps someone.

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

So I reenabled "glx" and "DRI" and everything seems just fine.  I believe the culprit in my case was simply the "NoAccel" flag being false by default.

This is now what my xorg.conf looks like:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

I TAKE IT ALL BACK!:(

Unfortunately now that all my video issues and slow-to-open apps have been remedied, now gl apps are too slow without the acceleration.  My xscreensaver slideshow carousel moves just a few frames per second.  The reason I didn't notice this at first is because that's about the only gl app that I use and I'm generally not around when it comes on.  Sorry for the false hope.

I did notice something that worried me a little in my xorg log:

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libvgahw.so
(II) Module vgahw: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

Apparently in order to have DRI working I also need acceleration enabled as well as HWCursor.  This was never an issue before.

It could be intel drivers and the current lack of TTM..

I'm thinking you're on to something there.:/

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Upon further tinkering it seems to be isolated to playing embedded flash video in firefox.  All other 3D, gl, video and so-forth are just fine.:/
This is just my situation though.  Anyone else find this to be true?

Hmm. Further interesting stuff: the CPU spiking not only is limited to LXDE, it's limited to x86_64. Doesn't happen on i686.

I think we are discussing different bugs. And yours looks a lot more serious than mine. tongue

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

I don't know if this is useful, buy my xorg also suffers from cpu spikes.

My xorg is aways at 1 or less % cpu, but when I resize windows (a la mod4+(h|l)), xorg starts to use up to more than 50%. And that's on a quadcore.
Initially I just thought awesome had really bad 2d performance. It doesn't like dragging a movie over the screen for example (while before on openbox I never had such issues). But now I think it might be related to this xorg issues. It might be totally irrelevant though:P

I'm on i686 btw.

For lack of better words: chair, never, toothbrush, really. Ohw, and fish!

Hmmm.  It does seems we are discussing different bugs.  I am running i686 as well.  Oh well.  If I really need to view embedded video all I need to do is change the "NoAccel" switch in my xorg.conf.  At least it's a semi-workaround.  Pretty annoying though.

Re: XOrg is maxxing out my CPU for several minutes after start [UNSOLVED]

Hello!

Sorry for bumping this really old thread, but I want to switch from Debian to Arch on my netbook and this issue is currently the deal-breaker for me. I've figured out, it's caused by lxde-settings-daemon. Kill that and the CPU usage immediately drops. But, looking at powertop, there are still way too many CPU wake-ups, way more than on Debian. This can't be good for battery usage.

Now the problem is, I have no idea where to even begin looking for a solution. Gullible Jones, did you ever figure something out? Or did you simply stop using LXDE?

Powertop does list the processes responsible for the wakeups, does it not?
May I suggest posting the powertop output so we can try to help you?

Hmm, for exact output I'd have to reinstall Arch (I went back to debian). From what I remember, the most was "<kernel core> : hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer)". Over 600 while CPU usage was at full, but then still something like 60-80 after killing lxde-settings-daemon. Even in debian this is on top, but with 20-25 wake-ups.
