hey guys everytime i boot i haveto unmute front in the gnome-sound mixer in order to get any sound, how can i stop this muting at boot.
also when i hold down the volume up button on my dell xps m1330 it stutters and doesnt always go all the way up forcing me to tap it loads of times to get it to the top rather than just usually holding it down
thanks

Hi everyone,
I'm aware that's an old post, but I'm having the exact same issue, if anybody's got an idea, that could be nice.
To make things clear: whatever the audio volume level was when I last switched off my laptop, it returns to muted when I turn it on again. I have to click on the gnome panel sound icon, volume control, and un-mute both PCM & general volume to have the sound work. When I've done that, no problem, everything's just for the best.
I'm running an updated Archlinux on a 6-7 year-old Nec I-select M4610 with ati graphics &c., if more info on hardware is needed I will give it alright, it's just that I don't think that hardware is concerned here, but who knows...
I'm using xorg.conf coz the autodetection from newest xorg didn't work out fine for me during install, dunno if that has to anything with it.
I suspect I don't have all permissions set right, because I struggled a bit to have alacarte displayed, and half-solved that by changing some conf folders's permissions (2 weeks ago, can't remember which ones).
I've no idea whever it has something to do with boot options, permissions or something else I may not even have ever heard of before...
Thx for directing me to the right url if I'm asking something terribly trivial, and thx for reading me anyway.

Are you using PulseAudio perchance?

Try doing the following in your ~/.xinitrc:
amixer set "Front" 80% unmuted
Of course, 80 could be any number between 0 and 100.
I had the same problem before, and solved it by this.
