They work on my system, although maximizing windows is slower wrt the previous version and generates some artifacts. Nothing too bad, anyway...So I did 'uname -r', and I am using 2.6.30-ARCH

touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf// I use catalyst to create a new xorg.conf file

http://wiki.archlinux.fr/xorg/amd-ati/p … _xorg.conf// Finally, I load the driver
modprobe fglrx// Now, I restart my computer as I don't know if 'startx' would work (as the graphic server is already running ^^)
// Once I'm back (and if everything is fine) I'll check the direct rendering
glxinfo | grep directHopefully, everything will work smoothly and I'll report back to say so
thanks epitre and snack for all !! i downloaded the packages that snack upalodead and follow eprite tuto and got all working .

So , We can't build catalyst with Preemptible RCU enabled (CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU) :
FATAL: modpost: GPL-incompatible module fglrx.ko uses GPL-only symbol '__rcu_read_lock'
That's a shame . I was looking for the best real-time performance officially supported in mainline .

your welcome iOmega
I would like to give some feedback about the catalyst packages and the xorg fix after almost a week using them.
I disabled the compositing
My computer became (a lot) slower. Maybe, it was like this from the beginning (and too excited to notice it ^^) or maybe it comes from xorg fix (I didn't installed it from the beginning but a little after), I don't why but I can say what is the result.
The result is that compositing gets my computer slower and I don't like it. Sometimes, with compositing on, a program can literally take 30 seconds to open when it only takes 2s when it's off O_o
By the way, I can confirm that the xorg fix does some visual garbage sometimes, but it's really not often so I don't mind it.
So, to resume, I still have the catalyst packages on my system (probably because I'm too lazy to uninstall them) but I'm not happy with them. I don't think they are worth installing them (in my case at least) but I'm looking forward to see better proprietary driver OR better free drivers
I know how open source works. It starts lower than proprietary code but eventually it gets better than it so I'm confident to see (very) good free drivers to my graphic card (which is by the way, a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4550)
In the meantime, I might send an email to sapphire and tell them that I won't by anytime soon another Sapphire ATI card unless the driver gets a lot better.
I know that ATI develops the driver, but I bought the card from Sapphire. So, from my point of view, it's Sapphire's problem
ps: I just have to find this Sapphire Customer relationship email to finally send it ^^

does anyone use mobility radeon HD3670 with catalyst? If yes could you confirm full screen flash performance?
Also could you share your xorg.conf

I have a Mobility Radeon HD3400 (probably inferior) and I can watch Youtube's HD videos (720p) in full screen and it works wonderfully! (using x86_64, i686 I don't know). My xorg.conf is exactly the same as "aticonfig --initial" generated, I had no xorg.conf before installing fglrx (HAL's magic ).
For those who don't want to spend 10min "makepkg'ing" here are download links for catalyst and catalyst utils for x86_64. The 2.6.31 patch is not applied. REMEMBER: remove libgl with "pacman -Rd libgl" and then install catalyst-utils and catalyst with "pacman -U *catalyst*pkg*" (always as root). After you have done that, add the fglrx module to your /etc/rc.conf and then run "aticonfig --initial" (if you hadn't a xorg.conf file before, if you did, check the wiki)

@acmps well yes in theory HD3670 should be better than HD3400 but last time HD3200 was giving better performance than HD3670
So i would wait till someone confirms it for my specific model.
I do appreciate your response though.
Thanks

Yeah I finally got catalyst to work after 4 days. Newest catalyst seems not to work with kernel 2.6.31. I got to downgrade my kernel and now it works great! With kernel 2.6.31 I got only blank screen and complete lock up.
Offline
i have catalyst 9.9 build and working with my custom kernel 2.6.31 build with kms for intel and radeon. I had to add this to get to work:
disablemodules=radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper,drm
This makes the fglrx kernel module happy and working fine. You can added my repo before core too. Here:
[archiso-live]
Server = http://arch-live.isawsome.net/packages/
This is only for arch i686. I hope it helps.

You have to comment out the 2.6.31 patch line in the PKGBUILD . Catalyst is working as expected in a custom 2.6.31 kernel here .

I used ubuntu livecd and chroot to repair my inittab and now system loads, but I still got black screen when I'm start X.

It looks like ACPI doesn't work on your card ether. Your best to turn it off. It could cause a Kernel panic and complete system lockup so you can't even change virtual terminals. Although it looks like you already turned it off. That line will show as an (EE) error if I don't have it off and a (WW) warning like that if I do have it off. Just keep it in mind if you didn't know already.

Wow, I'm impressed. I just took out my 8400GS to put in my brother's computer, and am currently using my integrated ATI 3100
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 3100 Graphics
I installed catalyst from AUR, and I've thrown everything I can think of at it, and it still works. Keep in mind that this whole time I've had Kwin running with compositing on and lots of effects. I tried multiple programs, and only one caused problems (that honestly could have happened on Nvidia too, see explanation).
Worked:
Unreal Tournament (Native)
Quake Live (Native)
Nexuiz (Native)
Mplayer and VLC Fullscreen (Native)
Runescape HD (Java Browser Game, OpenGL. I assume it would still randomly crash like it always has with any GFX though)
Mupen64plus (Native)
FoFiX (Native)
Project64 (Wine)
SimCity 4 Deluxe (Wine. This one might have actually worked better than with Nvidia...)
Team Fortress 2 (Wine. Same FPS as 8400GS, suprisingly)
Failed:
Call of Duty 2 (Wine. This one the screen got distorted when entering a game. I have NOT tested CoD2 in this version of Wine on my other card though, could be a wine issue)
Again, I had Kwin enabled for all these tests (for fun ), and I'm using the standard Catalyst packages, with integrated 3100 graphics, and I got surprisingly good performance (FPS rivaling my other card, sadly lmao. Similar, if not better, performance than in Windows). Honestly, I don't know why so many people are complaining, it works pretty good. When I buy a new graphics card, I will consider ATI as a viable option, unless something between now and then convinces me otherwise

It sounds like a lot of people are confused as to what things do. I just want to state what I know to help clear up some this confusion.
The xorg-maximize-fix has nothing really to do with fixing "Maximize" or "Minimize. That was a really bad name for that package.
The package should be called. xorg-server-No-backfill-patch
It is needed with some chipsets like my HD3650. It fixes the problems that happen with "ANY" composite manager not just Kwin but also Compiz, xcompmgr, the one in Xface and any other you can think of. Ya, if you use a composite manager your whole computer will lock up when you resize a window change desktop or even move a window around. So, it dose "Fix Maximize" but also a whole bunch of other stuff.
Also, it seems everybody has taken to using glxgears as a benchmark. I use to think it would give me a good idea about how well my video driver was working too. However, it doesn't. It really doesn't matter at all what FPS you get in glsgears. Graphics cards and video games are way, way more complex then glxgears. If you see FPS drop or go up in glxgears that doesn't meen at all that your going to get better or worse 3D performance in real video games.
Case and point.
Chipset HD3650
Catalyst 9.9.1
xorg-maximize-fix
Kernel 2.6.30With out xcompmgr
glxgears ~3,300 FPS
Nexuiz native 1680x1050 | Effects set to Normal | all other setting default.
100 - 200 FPS | most of the time ~150 FPS | With a whole lot going on ~80 - 90 FPS
----------------------------------------------------------
With xcompmgr ON
glxgears ~295 FPS
Nexuiz native 1680x1050 | Effects set to Normal | all other setting default.
100 - 200 FPS | most of the time ~150 FPS | With a whole lot going on ~80 - 90 FPS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
FOR REAL ^ There is a MAJOR differents in glxgear's FPS. About 11 Times slower with xcompmgr ON,
However, in real game play there is no difference at all. "Maybe" ~10 FPS slower with xcompmgr on.Ok now that that is out of the way. Lets all start using Supertuxracer or Nexuiz as a benchmark.
If you have problems with Kwin or Compiz or Xcompmgr or any other composit manager then you need to use the xorg-Maximize-Fix patched Xserver.--------------------------------------------
One more thing I have the new Catalyst 9.9.1, xorg-maximize-fix, and kernel 2.6.30 installed. I have a HD3650 and my screen resolution is at native 1680x1050. So, I hope you get that fixed siell. I posted my xorg.conf a few pages back.
got super-excited when i read this, tried xcompmgr again. oh wait, forgot about the thing that gave me the initial scare: how slow tilda comes down.
glxgears may or may not be a benchmark but the problem does exist
and i wont download 280mb worth of stuff just to use compiz for the same thing
trying the maximize fix, JUST IN CASE, as others have suggested...
EDIT but even it requires a ton of dependencies. does the patch REALLY do anything other than fix bugs associated with outright crashes, etc? as in, improve performance when using xcompmgr SIGNIFICANTLY?

I just bought a new Notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad T400 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470) and did a fresh arch-ftp install.
But im stuck at the ati catalyst driver. I followed the instructions on the wiki pages and cant get X running. I removed catalyst after that and tested with the open source driver and it worked. But i need some 3d acceleration, so im back at catalyst.
So i removed the os-drivers and installed catalyst again, loaded fglrx module and everything.
When i tried to create a xorg.conf with Xorg -configure i just get a "Caught signal 11. Server aborting". So i tried http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … _xorg.conf and then ran the "aticonfig --initial" command.

Looks like nobody knows how to help you. Hmm... I personally think that the the sequence "Caught signal 11" isn't right way to describe your problem, it looks like the problem is laying above that beautiful error (which indeed says nothing), and its placed here:

Ive searched google for "fglrx(0): board vendor info: third party graphics adapter - NOT original ATI"
and found same problem as yours (on radeon 3400) here: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19127
Unfortunetly without solution.
Maybe it's another fglrx bug, i dunno. I don''t even know that i am right .
I don't have radeon 3400 so i cannot help you more.
But maybe my suggestion will help you.
Good luck.
Edit: BTW: your xorg.conf looks good...
Edit: Maybe you should try older catalyst packages, like 9.8? just guessing

I installed the kernel26 2.6.31.3-1 today, as it is now out of Testing.
It has slowed down my open-source ATi HD2600 Pro's display. Most noticeable when scrolling the Firefox display, or moving windows around on the screen.
Also the video playback (checked in VLC) has deteriorated as well.
Hopefully there will be more packages released in the coming days that will solve this problem.
I have been extremely happy with the 2D display of the open-source drivers for approx' the last two months, up to this point. 2D has been faultless.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!

handy have you ever tried bfs scheduler? Here you can find some aur package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29842 . Read PKGBUILD first and uncomment some lines like #make menuconfig to build your own kernel config.
I'm using this scheduler (with my own kernel config, builded only to discard some unused hardware and speed up compilation) for some time on Intel Quad and Arch64 and gotta say that this scheduler speed up drawing of X's a lot! Every window appears faster, every list is sliding smoother, every picture is drawing faster. There is little disadvantage to - slower i/o = slower copying. In my case cuz of using truecrypt i must say that i can feel this disadvantage deeply... But after all I like bfs cuz i feel like my arch is faster, and i don't copy tones of gigabytes every day so this little i/o disadvantage isn't annoying at all.
(This disadvantage could be advantage for kde users - no kde freezes when copying tones of gigabytes, you can listen to music, surf on web and watch hd movie while copying - all works smoothly)
I'm using catalyst so i cannot tell you how open driver is running with bfs . I don't have time for testing this, but if you have some time - you can test bfs and tell us was it good for you
.
For everyone using catalyst and wanna try bfs - i must say that catalyst leaked (8.660 or almost-9.10) is running best with bfs - at least in my case.
Edit:I had to build catalyst-leaked for bfs on my own, catalyst-leaked module builded on 2.6.31 kernel don't want to work with 2.6.31-bfs kernel. If somebody need - i cant upload catalyst-leaked packages builded on kernel26-bfs 2.6.31-303.3 (todays build). This strange bfs maintainer's package naming means that this is 2.6.31.3 kernel with bfs version 303 patch
Have fun .

After the kernel update to 2.6.31 (no KMS) with catalyst windows re-draw is visible and window movement slow. (ATi HD2400 XT in Acer 4920G laptop). Open source driver is ok but no DRI.
Edit 1: Once again recompiled the catalyst and catalyst utils from AUR. This time every thing is ok. (patch applied)

updated kerne, same issue
Get a message that fglrx module is not loaded, so what we experience is vesa driver.
sudo modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.31-ARCH/video/fglrx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Try to build catalyst packages from aur http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22510 (do it on installed and running new shining kernel) if that won't help - ask me nicely and i will build that for you
(but this could take some time - i must to go sleep now)
Edit: dont read this, check out http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 88#p634688

coiote wrote:Please, I need the packages catalyst-9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz and catalyst-utils-9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz. They are the only ones that work with me. Thanks

Works fine on 2.6.30-ARCH (if you are using other kernel please unpack catalyst-9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz and paste lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/video/fglrx.ko to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/video/fglrx.ko , makes shure 'video' directory has 755 permission, if that won't help - give me a note, i can send you PKGBUILD and other files, so you can build a package on your own)
Thank Violo. My kernel was upgraded to 2.6.31. If possible could you send me PKGBUILD and other files? What do I need to change the PKGBUILD so that the drive to work? Thanks

Edit: i must be very sleepy cuz of buggy writing...
You must to uncomment the following line:
# patch -p0 < 2.6.31.patch
at PKGBUILD to build catalyst 9.9 aur package working with 2.6.31 kernel and please build this package on runing new kernel.
according to posts writen by good people on comments to 9.9 aur package you need to:
1. add "!radeon !ttm !drm_kms_helper !drm fglrx" in rc.conf
2. add "nomodeset" in the kernel line in GRUB's menu.list
I will check it out soon (right now im using 2.6.31-bfs and catalyst-leaked without any problems)
Edit: Ooouuu... sorry coiote - 9.8 was only catalyst which works good for you - i remember now . OK, for about 8-9 hrs i will upload all needed files ( sleep + some time to upload on my poor adsl ), be patient, check 9.9 - maybe it will work fine with 2.6.31
