Arch Linux and AMD 64 bit processor

i'm working on a computer. It's an AMD Athlon 64. It has a SATA hard drive too.

I wanted to know ahead of time if Arch will work on it. I know and i tried SUSE 9.2, and it worked. I know that at this time there aren't too many OS using 64 bit platform. Eventhough Arch Linux is obviously for a 32 bit processor, will it start the computer?

My opinion is that Arch Linux is the fastest distro I know. So I want to keep it.

well, I think everything should work in 32 bit mode at least.
You would be better off with a true x86-64 bit distro if you are dealing with large files, databases, etc.

Re: Arch Linux and AMD 64 bit processor

Hi ovihc.

I've installed Arch Linux on two AMD64 Shuttle machines, the most recent with an SATA drive. You might have some hardware support issues (I had some and all are fixed in the most recent Arch packages and kernels), but if you use the most-up-to-date installation of Arch you should have few problems.

Re: Arch Linux and AMD 64 bit processor

the only point i found with amd64 was not with amd64.

With udev SATA drives do not get listed in /dev/discs/. They appear as SCSI drives (/dev/sd*)
You have to modify your fstab and your grub's menu.lst or lilo.conf in order to keep your system working.

Re: Arch Linux and AMD 64 bit processor

if someone were really up to it he would simply recompile all packages using ABS after installing GCC with 64bit support or something. it would take it's time but it isn't all that hard. smile

Re: Arch Linux and AMD 64 bit processor

can you write an step by step guide?

I could learn how to do it, but i don't have time for it, and the amd64 runs incredibly fast thought it is not optimized, so i won't move no finger in order to understand things written in a language that's not my native language (english): I'll only follow an step by step guide.
