where are my cdroms?

Ie just installed some new packages and now when I try to mount a cdrom

mount /mnt/cdrom

it says:

mount: special device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 does not exist

When I ls /dev/cdroms I get a blank listing, so indeed the devices aren there.

How do I get them back?

could you elborate some more? What did you install? Were you installing gcc 3.2 stuff into a 0.3 install? Please give a bit more info so we can give you some possible solutions.

That's just the problem, I don't know if it has anything to do with de new packages or not, haven't used my cdroms for a while

I think it's a devfs thingy since they don't show up in my /dev directory, but I'm a devfs n00b, so I don't know/ e.g. not sure

well one thing you can check is that your cdroms still show in /etc/fstab (i will post mine later)

do your drives (both hds and cdroms) show up in the output of dmesg?

Another thing you can check is the devfsd is running if not you can restart/respawn it (again i will have to give you the command for this later).

Also, if you have pacman 2.1 installed, make sure that in your /etc/pacman.conf that both etc/fstab and etc/devfs.conf are in the "NoUpgrade" section near the top (and any other key config files). This prevents these files from being overwritten if "filesystem" ios one of your upgrades.

just a few things...if you need more help let us know. Post any error messages you get or suspect output as this will grealy assist in solving your problem.

/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9960 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 /mnt/dvdrom udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

That a "I guess it okay to me" for /etc/fstab !!!

Dmesg
hda : Matrox HDD...
hdb: Samsung HDD .....
hdc: Lite-on Cdrom
hdd: Samsung DVDrom

so Dmesg ok!

devfs
bad WHEN in config line !!

So there the erorr, let fix that line ... ok done, restart devfsd, ok

and YES /dev/cdroms/ is no more empty !!
