Grub menu

Hi guys,
Is it possible to get a grubmenu like the ones in Linux Mint 7?

How can I accomplish that?

Re: Grub menu

I wouldn't know.  I have never used Mint, and I would guess that significantly less than half of Archers have.  Furthermore, do you really only want to get advice from current Arch users who also have used Mint 7, or would you rather get advice from the entire community?  To bring it down to the least common denominator, can you describe what you don't like about Grub as it appears on your machine, and how you would like to change it?

Re: Grub menu

Can you post the contents of your mint linux /boot/grub/menu.lst and related xxx.lst files?  They contain your answer.

My menu.lst:

splashimage /grub/arch.xpm.gz

title Arch Linux

title Shutdown Computer

title More Options...
root (hd0,6)

Hint: Mount the iso (mount -o loop name.iso /path/to/mntpoint) and then have at look in it's /boot/grub/ looking for menu.lst

Re: Grub menu

Post /boot/gfxmenu/linuxmint.message

Everything you need is there... are you wanting the background image or..??  The Arch grub doesn't have gfx enabled by default, but you can install grub-gfx from the [community] repo pretty easily.

Ah... have you tried the usual tar and tar.gz options (rename it to blah.tar and try to untar it and ditto for blah.tar.gz.

Here are the two screenshots of my setup... what exactly do you want?  The background image or the fancy font or..?  You might wanna post your query in the mint linux forum as well.

EDIT: does mintlinux use Grub or Grub 2?  I believe Grub 2 has some enhancements for 'graphical booting.'
EDIT2: Yep!  It's probably grub 2, see the following:

Re: Grub menu

No, Mint doesn't use grub2-gfxmenu, it uses legacy grub patched by suse. Quick explanation of the packages:

* grub: legacy grub, used by Arch default
* grub-gfx: legacy grub patched with wallpaper support, used by most distros
* grub-gfxmenu: legacy grub patched with limited animated theme support, used by mint and suse
* grub2: the newest version of grub, will be used by next Ubuntu release as I understand
* grub2-gfxmenu: the newest grub, patched by Mr. Bennett, which can create themes identical to grub-gfxmenu but not use the ones from grub-gfxmenu itself. i have many themes similar to what you want in AUR under the names grub2-theme-* (because grub2-gfxmenu will eventually be merged into mainline grub2 as I understand it).

What you want can be done in two ways:

A) Install and set up grub-gfxmenu from AUR then edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to use a line like
gfxmenu=/path/to/messagefile
inside it, putting the message file you want in there, which you can grab from mint at gfxmenu=/boot/gfxmenu/linuxmint.message or something as the menu.lst you posted shows.

B) Alternatively, you can follow my tutorial for grub2-gfxmenu http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56576 here and achieve a similar effect with the newer grub, and likely have an easier time tweaking it to your needs.

Re: Grub menu

Anybody know how to install grub2 onto a machine running raid? Grub2 doesn't have a command prompt, how can one then set the proper partitions for booting?
