Install linux distr on usb drive to run from within windows, no reboot

How can I install a linux distribution (arch or ubuntu, preferably) on a usb flash drive and run it from within windows, without rebooting? I can't install software on a lab computer, and I can't reboot these computers or boot from a live cd. Is there any way that I can just run linux, straight from windows (or maybe a portable version of qemu) and still upgrade the system, save files, etc, to my usb drive? Thanks!

I don't think you can unless virtualization software has already been installed on the host system (Windows in this case).

I was thinking of this the other day. It would be nice to have some kind of portable USB based, self contained operating system running within a VM that can be run anywhere within a window.

I doubt that's feasible at all but it's still a nice idea.

Use qemu. No install needed, you can just run it from your usb

Interesting.

How is the performance?
