rhythmbox/amarok1/amarok/songbird will not work in KDE, but alsa works

I, for the longest time, have been using Openbox or Wmii with OSS.  But I decided after over a year of not touching KDE that I'd try going back.  As much as I love the Unix way, sometimes remember 10,000 keybindings for 100 cli apps and such gets a tad old and I desired the ease of a full blown DE again.

So I installed KDEmod (4).   Great, except KDE complained about not seeing Alsa, so i spent last night getting Alsa working.  And it does work.  aplay on a wav file works, flash videos in firefox and konqueror work.

But no audio apps does.

Amarok (the latest and greatest) will not load my entire music collection into the playlist, it freezes up the entire desktop environment off and on for about an hour in attempt to do so, the list never populates with even one single track, and eventually it just crashes.  Considering the app has been beaten with an ugly stick, no big loss.

So I try Songbird, which is complaining about: "both autoaudiosink and alsasink elements are missing" .  The application loads, it loads my entire library but when I go to play a song it throws this error over and over again.

Ok, so back to the gtk world right? Good old rhythmbox, well no there as well as rhythmbox is throwing the exact same error as Songbird.

So.. off the Amarok 1.4 from AUR.  It compiles just fine.  Got it all setup with mysql to handle my large collection, and bam, xine can't detect any audio drivers.

Since i've struck out, and the last 3 are throwing errors about audio drivers and alsasink and whatnot, i'm guessing something is wrong with my alsa installation.

Any one got a clue about what's going on ?

it does sound like some alsa issue.

using kdemod 4 as well. all i had to do for sound setup was installing "kdemod-phonon-backends-xine" and "codecs" from AUR.

have u tried running

alsaconf

yet?

kdemod-phonon-backend-xine  was already installed, but I just reinstalled, no change.

I have had all my codecs installed for a long time (at least I think, mplayer, rythmbox with oss, audacious with oss, totem, and mpd/mpc +oss all worked fine).

and yes I have ran alsaconf.

Nope, just what's specified in the wiki here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALS … _Equalizer

Re: rhythmbox/amarok1/amarok/songbird will not work in KDE, but alsa works

I did what was stated here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79873  as I have a nvidia hda card  (it says to install phonon-xine )

amarok 1.4 still states that xine can't find drivers

songbird now plays without error, as in the application looks like its playing the song, very faint high pitched static comes through my headphones (but it inaudibile on the speakers) but no song actually audbily plays.  But at least it stopped throwing errors.

with amarok 2 (i guess that's the version number of the newest in extra), i am now having the problem described here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=78230  regarding taglib-extra, i deleted amarok from /var/cache/pacman/pkg, pacman -Rns the packages and then pacman -Sy'd them again, I still have the error " amarok: error while loading shared libraries: libtag-extras.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

and rhythmbox (which i'd really rather not use) now behave exactly like songbird does.  It acts like it's playing, but I hear nothing.  No channels are muted.

I had this particular problem as well. There is a temporary solution here: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16338#comment50091.

Education is favorable to liberty. Freedom can exist only in a society of knowledge. Without learning, men are incapable of knowing their rights, and where learning is confined to a few people, liberty can be neither equal nor universal.

Have you tried using pulse at all?

kmix doesnt work with oss, you have to use their mixer.  Hmmm sorry, I've got nothing else since I switched away from alsa since it kept randomly turning my volume to 250% and giving me heart attacks...my arms were stinking from adrenaline.
