Is console login on tty1-6 still working?
Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

1. What happens after you type in your username/password?
1a. Do you get an incorrect login/password?
1b. Does the screen turn black and nothing happens?
2. Can you go through your /var/log/messages.log files?
3. Can you login as another user, or as root?

ive tried logging as both root and the user i set up, when i try it as the user it just goes back to the username prompt, when i try root, it says login attempt failed

If you switch over to one of the tty screens, can you login?
If so, it means that slim is not set up correctly.
Once, a looong time ago, I ran up against that, and since I was only playing around, I never got around to figuring out what I needed to change in order to make it work.
If you can login from the console, then can you please post your slim config file? It should be in /etc, but, as I don't use it, I'm not sure the exact name or location. That way, someone that does use it, can tell you what you need to do in order to fix it. ![]()

Are you trying to log into Openbox or LXDE? If you post your .xinitrc it might help diagnose the issue...

im not sure if im logging into either, i think it should be lxde, since that USES openbox, but...
and im not sure about the .xinitrc, since i can't get back to console i have to reinstall everything, ill post it when i get it

You don't have to reinstall everything.
In order to get to a console you can use the key combo <ctrl><alt><fwhatever>
So if you want tty2 the combo would be <ctrl><alt><f2>
If you want to see the output of your X session, then it would be tty1 <ctrl><alt><f1>
Same for the rest of the F-keys.
Once in the console, you can use <ctrl><fkey>, but <ctrl><alt><fkey> also works.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinitrc
just do nano ~/.xinitrc as a regular user and add exec startlxde then F2 to save

You could use the standard one from the wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xin … d_.xinitrc
or you could just put:
exec openbox-sessionin the file and it should work...
/edit
Too slow...

Run one or the other from .xinitrc -- not both.
I don't understand what you mean by
specific place i have to set it to

well i know that when i ran slim as DM, i got a message when i tried to login as root, so i went to the wiki and it said you need one of those files for every user, so i wondered if it had to be in a specific place to find it or anything

.xinitrc is in your home folder: ~/.xinitrc
By default slim expects to find such a file for all users and will complain it is "unable to process the login command" if no such file exists in the user's home directory.
