I was wondering if there's an audio visualization program such that it takes the output of alsa (regardless of source), and produces a visualization.

Maybe projectm?

I've been trying to figure out how to get projectm to work for me, but both ways (via the wiki, and installing through AUR) haven't worked.

I don't know how far you got, but the projectm-libvisual-alsa PKGBUILD has an error and the maintainer apparently didn't read the comments about it (projectm-libvisual should be libvisual-projectm). I re-flagged it to get attention brought to the issue.
If you edit the PKGBUILD and build it still doesn't work for you?

Well, at least I got a result this time.
Yes, changing that did do the trick. I was now able to launch projectM-libvisual-alsa, however it was really slow (slightly less than 1 fps).

I can't help you there. Today is the first time that I've tried it in months and it's working really well.
