[solved] Sound issue

Hello all,
last days i'm having trouble with my audio. Well, it works in most cases, but some apps sometimes work, sometimes don't. For example america's army say "open /dev/[sound/]dsp: No such file or directory". But not every time, one day it works, other day not. This one causes me most pain, since it's the only game i play lately smile I noticed these issues with xmms, audacity, mplayer. But kde apps seem to work fine (amarok, kdetv...).

Lately i installed new ati graphic card, with some audio integrated (Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV630/M76 audio device [Radeon HD 2600 Series]). Might be this causing troubles? Tried to disable related module by putting !snd_hda_codec_atihdmi it in /etc/rc.conf but after reboot module is still loaded.

I just can't figure out what's causing it, it would be easier if it didn't work at all i guess, but this way... Well, hopefully some of you have a clue whats going on smile Any ideas, help appreciated. Thanks

I am experiencing something similar. After installing a Radeon 4850, I get the KDE opening notes and sound with some AVI-files, and that's about it. The KDE Multimedia configuration app declares all sound devices to be working, however both Amarok and SMPlayer are unable to output sound from mp3-files, and there is no sound in flash videos and wmv-files.

I had heard about problems with newer ATI cards for games, but not about sound problems...

EDIT: In System Settings --> Multimedia, I changed the default (i.e. preferred) to "hw: 1.3" which claims to be "ATI HDMI", and now I have sound "everywhere" again!

For my new card I use a HDMI to DVI adapter, but didn't realize it would affect sound...

Don't know if this is applicable to your situation.

Re: [solved] Sound issue

Seems like disabling snd_hda_intel module did the trick for me, i don't use it anyway smile I'm not sure, did it yesterday, so i'll wait a bit before marking this solved.

Thanks for suggestion, tho.
