no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

I've setup archlinux for the first time and everything seems to be working but when I launch LXDE I have no keyboard/mouse. Although I can ctrl+alt+F1/2 to get back to console and then kill it w/ ctrl+c.

There were 2 Xorg tests in the wiki the first one didn't do anything (blank screen, no input) the second seemed to work (opened a terminal w/ mouse and keyboard support).

I've tried using both input hotplugging and also just the xorg.conf (using hwd -xa to generate xorg.conf w/ hotplugging disabled)

this is an on older laptop, idk if that matters.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

Is HAL running and setup correctly? Also, pastebin your Xorg log, if possible.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

You'll need to install Mouse & Keyboard

# pacman -S xf86-input-mouse
# pacman -S xf86-input-keyboard

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

hal is installed and i think setup correctly (considering when running xterm w/ hotplugging enabled i have mouse and keyboard support). xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse are installed.

hotplugging:
With hotplugging enabled testing via X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf fails. Testing via setting ~/.xinitrc to exec xterm results in a terminal with mouse + keyboard working. Setting ~/.xinitrc to exec startlxde results in LXDE apparently loading correctly (graphics look ok) however I have no mouse/keyboard.

w/o hotplugging:
Disabling hotplugging in xorg.conf results in the X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf test failing same as above. The xterm test loads a terminal but I have no mouse or keyboard. LXDE same as above, appears to load ok but no mouse or keyboard

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

I am suffering exactly the same problem since reinstalling Arch a few weeks ago. It is infuriating since I only reinstalled following an ext4 disk corruption problem.

LXDE installed on an Intel E5200 (oc to 3.25ghz), Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2 motherboard (GEForce 7100 graphics), 2GB 800mhz RAM & a 320GB WD SATA HD.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

Update: I've worked around the problem.  I deleted my xorg.conf file and auto-generated one using nvidia-xconfig.  I commented out the references to type1 and freetype modules and now lxde fires up without any problems.

EDIT: I should add that xterm displayed the mouse pointer but initially the mouse pointer was not displayed in LXDE, despite clearly being operational as I could access lxpanel/lxlauncher using the mouse by second guessing where the pointer should be.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

I've noticed the same behavior that Paper Lawyer describes.  I also have the additional twist that every new window in LXDE opens in the upper-left corner of the screen and cannot be dragged away from that corner.  This same behavior was exhibited with a 10-year-old Twinhead laptop and a 5-year-old Toshiba G15 Qosmio.

The Twinhead is now behaving properly; I removed xorg.conf and allowed hal to work without it.  The same "fix" didn't fix anything with the Qosmio, which has a much nicer video card (Nvidia GeForce 6600, just installed).  Running nvidia-xconfig to generate a new xorg.conf produces a nice, sharp background wallpaper but individual application windows are still stuck in the top-left corner of the monitor screen.

I knew enough to comment out the "type1" line in xorg.conf but I haven't tried to do the same to "freetype".  I'll have to give that a try tonight.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

OK I think this can be fixed by reinstalling openbox
pacman -S openbox and this fixed the problem for me

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

I'm just struggling with this problem now. Tried mudrii's fix and discovered openbox wasn't installed at all. Installing openbox fixed the problem.

Re: no keyboard/mouse in LXDE

I had the same problem when I tried LXDE, and never figured it out myself. Thanks.
I have added a note to the "How to Install LXDE" section of the wiki, pointing out that it's necessary to have Openbox (or at least some window manager) installed.

(I thought Openbox should be a dependency for LXDE, but maybe there are good reasons not to do so.)
