Hi!
For last 1,5 years i`ve been using Linux on my laptop, and sine the first day i installed Linux on it i ran into a problem - Compiz works good, but the moment i enable window decorations, all the animations become choppy, especially for maximized windows. When i disable decorations, compiz runs very good. I did a lot of tests:
i ran with gtk-windows-decorator,
i played with compiz settings (--loose-binding, --indirect-rendering),
i played with nvidia-powermizer settings,
i played with emerald themes
and i came to conclusion that Emerald is what causes that choppiness. Especially when i select some transparent themes and engines like oxygen, trueglass and vrunner. I achieved best performance with pixmap engine, but that didn`t solve my problem completely. I ran into some similar posts while googling for a way to solve my problem, but i never found a solution. Maybe somebody knows what is the problem? I doubt that is a hardware problem, since my lappy is pretty powerful: Nvidia 8600M GT (512 VRAM), 3Gb RAM, 2,4 Dual Core etc. I`m running Compiz StandAlone, but i did have the exactly same problems when i used it with Gnome and XFCE.
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. i have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed.

I've always preferred gtk-window-decorator over emerald.

Yes, but running gtk-window-decorator on Compiz Standalone means a lot of Gnome dependencies, and that causes a lot of glitches. Also, Compiz also makes them transparent, and choppiness doesn`t go away.

you no longer need inderect rendering or loose bindings with NVIDIA
let's have a look at your xorg.conf and xorg logfile?

I think you should add some performance settings in your xorg.conf device section:
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Also I don't see you enabling composite:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Thank you for you answer, i added these settings to my xorg.conf but it didn`t change anything... ![]()
I know about powermizer issues in Nvidia Drivers, and i know that my card behaves better when i lock it in the Maximum Performance position, but it overheats. I also know that there are a lot of other users with the same Nvidia video card that have it working flawlessly ![]()

I'm running gnome + compiz flawlessly on my Arch64 desktop with nvidia 8500gt and a 3.2 GHz pentium 4; I'm using gtk-window-decorator though..
Edit: btw, how many framerates does glxgears report?

Hi there!
From my experience, using nVidia, using emerald themes always eats down on performance. That is why I use GTKwd too.
I don't know if it's related to nVidia, I've never tested with any other cards, but I can say that it makes performance drop a LOT on both a 8600M GT and on a 105MX.
This link seems to indicate the problem being emerald+nvidia (http://forum.compiz.org/showthread.php?t=5089), but here is a workaround that worked for someone at ubuntu forums, maybe it helps things on your side too. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=589232&page=2. Check posts 16 & 17.
Hope this helps!
