So I just did a fresh install of Arch, and installed gnome and gnome-extra. I can startx into gnome, and it works fine unless I click on certain things. When I click on either the clock on the panel, system > preferences > display, or system > preferences > appereance > font tab. It will freeze, and doesn't accept any mouse or keyboard input. I have to hold down the power button until it reboots. There are no errors in Xorg.0.log. I have xf86-input-mouse and -keyboard installed, and am running hal and fam. Any Ideas?
Thanks!

OK, so I installed KDE, and it freezes completely on start-up. It starts loading and shows a little hard drive icon, then three other icons are just becoming unblurred, and it completely freezes. No keyboard or mouse input.

Before anyone asks ;-) I can and did run xterm through startx, and it works perfectly fine.

OK, so I found something that sorta works, but not really. It's here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Via_Unichrome
Adding the Xaa etc. to the xorg.conf made it no longer freeze, but I don't have any direct acceleration. Is there any other fix?

I had the same problem (KDE freezing on startup right after the hard drive icon shows, but Gnome mainly working OK and xterm working just fine), and I also found no useful information about how to fix this. I have an older machine with a VIA KM400. The fix outlined on the Unichrome info page does nothing for me - on my machine, KDE still stops at exactly the same point. I've given up trying, but would be interested to see what was going wrong here.

OK, so now I installed xfce4 and it works fine using that same fix. But when I start compiz-fusion, the whole thing freezes just like before. Any ideas?
