Is it really that bad to not copy an abs directory to a temporary one?

The wiki page does not explain much about this; it only says the information will be overwritten with the next run of the "abs" command. If I just wanted to recompile a package because it wasn't working for whatever reason, is it really so bad to just cd to the abs directory and run

makepkg -i

or similar?

Well, the abs directory in question would generally be owned by root, requiring you to either change its ownership or run makepkg as root. That's not advisable, nor does it save (much) time.

I keep my sources in a dedicated dir that my user has full access to, if needed i copy the stuff rom /var/abs into it.

I see. I guess in reality it is much simpler and safer to just copy the dirs and build as a normal user.
