I started using LXDE coming from Gnome. I loved how I could control the volume on my speakers via the external buttons on my laptop like I did in Gnome. After applying the LXDE panel applet, it won't adjust my volume with the buttons. Only while dragging it's slider.
Anyone know how to use gnome's volume set? I am already using the gnome-power-manager.

I think it is not possible to use gnome applet sliders for volume in LXDE. You can use gnome-volume-control, but it is not applet.

Thats what I feared. Anyone know an alternative to get my volume buttons working?

you can try xfce4-volumed
or try gnome-setting-daemon not gnome-power-manager
LXDE don't have any keyboard settings?

You could try installing xbindkeys http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xbindkeys if it recognizes your external buttons then you can bind them to amixer's master volume
