I can remember a blog entry by aseigo before kde 4.3 when he told that he increased the loading time of the wallpapers the best he can....
I think that it is not really a problem but more a technical issue....

I think you got too much time on your hands . Nice job!

Thx. Bug is still present in KDE 4.3-SVN (08-09-2009). Do You have 32 or 64 bit Arch? Does anyone have other distribution/system with KDE 4.3 to check if this bug is reproducible there?

You seem to be the only one, though...
kdemod 4.3.1 no change from kdemod 4.3.0 SLOW loading time.

I was able to reproduce this bug in 32 bit OpenSUSE (factory build). Reported to KDE team: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206788

I tried to use a non-scaled background, jpg instead of png but still got the long load times. I tried Virus though with a background and didn't have any problems oddly enough. For now I'm just using weather which is giving me the stock background (though it probably shouldn't) and it loads as it should.

Yippee... yes, he did!
Guess Pierre was right on the money in post #16 when he said "The more you confirm a problem the faster it get fixed."

Yay, RESOLVED FIXED.
Thanks everyone for reporting and voting. And special thanks to Beat Wolf for fix.
Now, all we need is KDE 4.3.2 (or temporary fix for kdebase-workspace - probably not worth effort )

Qt 4.5.3-1 (just dropped into Extra) seems to have fixed this bug, or at least it's working for me, now.

Qt 4.5.3?? I don't think so, why should it fix a bug in the KDE wallpaper plugin? For me it hasn't fixed it (of course).

Don't really know why it worked for me. I only upgraded GRUB2 and Qt, so feel pretty sure it had to be Qt and not GRUB that fixed it. I restarted 4 times to make sure and KDE starts up almost instantly compared to what it was before.

Yes startup is fine for me, too. But do all items in the tray get loaded immediately, too?

I only have a couple of items in the tray, but everything seems to be loading very quickly. I'm not using the default wallpaper, but don't think that should matter. I just rebooted one more time to make sure and all is loading up in about one-fifth the time it was before the Qt upgrade, so I'm happy now.

Do you use a wallpaper at all? For me it still doesn't work, I only have a really quick login when using all other display plugins but the wallpaper, for example solid color or virus.

Yes, I'm using a simplistic wallpaper out of a wallpapers folder in my /home directory, but I just tried the default "air" wallpaper, and it loaded fast too. I don't have Desktop Effects enabled, but don't think it has anything to do with that because I've had slow KDE startups weather they were on, or off. In fact, my last slow startup was about 30 minutes before upgrading Qt. Still not sure why things started going faster, but for me it was right after the Qt upgrade and was a bit of a nice surprise.

Just to be sure, I put the older Qt back on here and measured the startup, then put the new Qt back on and measured it again. The startup of KDE4 from startx [ENTER] to a complete desktop was 22.5 seconds with the old Qt, but after the Qt upgrade, it dropped to 5 seconds.

Not for me. I don't think kmserver is part of qt.

For you guys that the new Qt didn't help, you can find a temporary fix in post #9 of the following bug report:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206788
I really have no idea why Qt fixed it for me, but going from 22 seconds down to 5 seconds is a drastic improvement.

This seems to be fixed in KDE 4.3.2 which will be released next week.

That's good news. I'm not sure why the new Qt fixed it for me, but it makes me think the slow startup on my box was not caused by the wallpaper issue suffered by others. I'm anxious now to see what all 4.3.2 will fix.
