Arch + 1; Vista -1

Last week while my wife was out of town I replaced the OS on her computer from Mandriva to Arch. I've used Mandy several times and have generally liked it. However Arch kept beckoning and I installed it on my own computer a month or so ago.

Anyhow it took 3 evenings last week working a couple of hours each evening and I got her set up with Arch running gnome and compiz, complete with rotating cube.

It was a lot easier the second time without most of the issues that confused me the first time around.

My laptop was running Vista with Mandriva in a virtualbox. I rarely got outside of Mandriva. I had been keeping Vista until I made sure that I could run all of the windows programs that I need under wine.

So yesterday I got up in the morning with the goal to have a complete Arch setup on the laptop, and just let Vista disappear. With a few interruptions to do errands and stuff, by 6:00 PM I had it set up with all of the apps I commonly use, including a music studio. Compiz was the only piece that wasn't fully working, but after a break to sleep and to work today, I quickly found out the solution to that.

I will be using this computer quite a bit with others watching, so I consider the rotating cube and wobbly windows and such to be quite useful.

So at this point, the world has one more computer running Arch, and one less with Vista.

Good for you. smile
I just converted my Asus G50VT from Windows 7 -> Arch.
Working on getting the custom acpi stuff worked out and the oled screen but very impressed with the advancements to WINE, running 3d games is amazing now. big_smile

I also migrated ENTIRELY to Arch. I've always dualbooted all my systems with one version or another of Windows, but I finally found the linux distro I really like. After some thinking, backing up, wine-checking, my computer is now 100% Arch64 + KDE 4.3.1 smile Runs everything like a charm(including all my Steam games!)

NVIDIA?

Are we talking 3D games here or very simple 2D?

L4D?
CS?
Bioshock?

If so I really envy you, I can't get anything 3D related at all to work with on wine, then again i have a card from crapATI, so that's not a suprise.

For me WoW + Catalyst 9.9 + Wine on 32bit works so far. But it took me some days to get it running. But yeah, if you want to be on the safe side it's better to go with NVidia I guess.

Nvidia 7100, yeah... I decided a long time ago(before I went all linux, anyway) that if possible I would always buy an nvidia card. I play Garry's Mod and TF2

Yep same here, I have 2! Arch systems now ASUS G50VT runs a 512mb 9800GS and I get avg 50 fps on Call of Duty 4 running under wine.
My new desktop system has 2x9800GTX+s and it gets around 90fps on CoD4. big_smile

I don't have any ATI cards so sadly I can't comment on them. sad

That's what I bought too (Original Studio 15, not the newer 16:9 ratio monitor although I wish I would have waited to get that).  I was so happy to be able to buy a system from the manufacturer with Linux on.  Now Ubuntu lasted all of 2 minutes on there, but still, it wasn't Windows!!

Re: Arch + 1; Vista -1

I've never had luck with 3D in wine either, NVidia or ATI. I keep Windows (7 is the current flavor) on the machine for work as well though (Office 2007 and a game or two).
