I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

This is great! There are some speed issues for me when choosing OS's, but they are acceptable when the payoff is a circular countdown spinning around a penguin and a nice backdrop and icons!
Anyone know how to stop it from dropping to the graphical terminal when it is just left to boot the default os?

Is there a reason you don't want to add the gfxmenu information to the pre-existant GRUB2 wiki? http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub2
Offline
Yes, because (1) gfxmenu is going to be merging into official grub2 before too long and who knows what changes they're going to make, (2) I don't have time to do so, (3) anyone else who wishes to do so has the ability to without asking me, and (4) I said earlier in this thread that I was going to make a wiki page separate of grub2 for it (too much different stuff to clutter up the normal grub2 page with) but couldn't for the life of me find out how (nobody answered me). On a side note, I know how to do it now, but it's rather pointless and too late. When gfxmenu is grub2 mainline, stable, and more or less "set in stone" as far as setting it up goes (see the problems in this thread over people using old bzr config breaking grub), I'll do it if noone else has already done so.
IE: It's a waste of time right now and I didn't know how to make a separate page before, but seeing as the wiki is quite open, you're welcome to do it yourself if you really want it there right now.

FrozenFox, since you seem to be on top of this stuff, do you know what happened to the 915resolution patch? ie, was it ever accepted or planned to be accepted into Grub mainline? From the looks of it, the patch was abandoned shortly after it was released, and it doesn't work with newer releases. Without this, the graphical menu is basically useless, as it will look horrible on my screen.
Offline
I don't know about that as far as mainline goes, sorry. However, if youre using grub2-gfxmenu, the patch does seem to work okay according to one guy on AUR whom I suggested it to. I posted the info in the troubleshooting section of this tutorial on how to do it a ways back.

The patch doesn't seem to work anymore, though. It was against the 1.96 release of grub2, while it is currently the 1.97 release.

Firewalker:
1) Have you checked whether that's the same issue as Troubleshooting #5 from the first post? I can't say whether or not vmware works properly, but I tested it on virtualbox a ways back and it worked fine other than being absurdly slow (took like 40 seconds to load to the graphical menu, then 5 seconds to switch between OSes or some such nonsense).
2) Check that grub2-gfxmenu-overlay is installed properly and you can see all the fonts in the grub2 folder /boot/grub/fonts.
3) Have you tried another theme? It's possible that particular theme used a font which was changed/removed with the new overlay I just posted. Likewise, does text work when grub2-gfxmenu is in text mode?
Smartboy:
EDIT: Just waking up ftl.
Damn. I'm afraid I can't help you then.

ls -al /boot/grub/themes/*/* please, chupy. if everything seems to be there (like theme.txt being pointed to) and permissions don't seem weird (granted, I don't think permissions would matter consider the kernel isn't even loaded.. but I don't know), try using a set root=(hdX,Y) at the top of grub.cfg somewhere pointing to the root partition. if it still doesn't work, leave that set root there but remove the /boot prefix from the theme line in use and see what happens. also, be sure grub2-gfxmenu-overlay is installed properly. pacman -Ql grub2-gfxmenu-overlay should show all manner of theme files.
also, the text mode menu is otherwise working, correct?
as for a log, if it writes one, I'm unaware of it. couldnt hurt to look in /var/log as usual though.

Hm. I'm wondering if perhaps it installed some files on your hard drive as opposed to the flash drive (or set something up incorrectly using that assumption), on the assumption you used grub-install /dev/your-flash-drive-device from an HD Arch.
On the assumption that
(1) Your flash drive does not have a separate /boot partition
(2) Your flash drive arch root is /dev/sdc1 and obviously on /dev/sdc
Try this and see if you have any luck:
(From your hard drive arch)
1) sudo mkdir /mnt/root
2) sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/root
3) sudo mount -t proc proc /mnt/root/proc
4) sudo mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/root/sys
5) sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/root/dev
6) Copy the *.pkg.tar.gz files for grub2-gfxmenu and grub2-gfxmenu-overlay to your flash drive /
7) chroot /mnt/root
8) pacman -U /grub2-gfxmenu-*.pkg.tar.gz (from the chrooted environment)
9) sudo grub-install /dev/sdc (from the chrooted environment)
10) Of course check/copy the grub.cfg as necessary
If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what the problem is. I don't see any issues with your grub.cfg offhand, but I don't have too much time to look it over atm

I didn't know (maybe it is here, but I didn't find it) that grub2 numbers hard drives differwnt way. I was used to (hd0,0) for /dev/sda1, (hd0,4) for /dev/sda5 and so on. Apparently grub2 describes my /dev/sda5 as (hd0,5). Sorry, my bad.
Thank you FrozenFox for your post.

You are welcome anyway. I mentioned that many times in the first post though. It's also listed as one of the first things you should read before starting. (Intro B 2) RTFM sir!
Glad it's all working for you.

Damn it xabz. I was just enjoying my time off in Windows 7, away from KDE bugs. Now I'm going to have to boot back into Arch and package those.
Hehe. I will hopefully have them both up in AUR and the ArchFox binary repos within a few days, along with a couple other things I forgot about. I'm also considering adding a new/up-to-date grub2-gfxmenu-bzr, since a couple people have bugged me about the very old age of the stable package in AUR (corresponding to the self-contained code provided by the gfxmenu author).
Thanks for your great work as always, Xabz

I am happy to report after so much attempting that the flickering actually went away... when I changed the resolution.
Are there any widescreen (16:10) Arch themes for this?

Great news. I will add that information to the troubleshooting section in the main post, thank you, Yaro. Unfortunately, I've not seen wider res themes before, but I couldn't say for sure. You might try building one from the instructions on the author's website (and reporting back if you want to share!).

I've looked into it. No sign of any widescreen themes. However, since this changed to my LCD's native resolution without complaint I imagine most of it involves simply dropping in replacement images. I am reading up on the theme format to make a snazzy theme. If I ever get it done, I'll let you know.

Hey, i have an issue, but 1st i must thank for this beautiful piece of software.
I have grub2-graphical in my mbr and i installed debian lenny with grub2 on its root partition. I tried several combinations but im not being able to chainload into the debian grub. I know i can simply add the line from debian's grub.cfg into arch's grub.cfg, but is it possible to chainload ? My debian install is on sda9. I tried (hd0,9) , (hd0,8). They dont work. Get an error like "unrecognized string etc etc"

Are you sure that you have GRUB2 on your Debian installation?

Fyi those who've been waiting for the theme packages for Xabz' new stuff: I got all of it packaged and ready to post to AUR and the archfox repos. However, I'm waiting on a few emails about the licenses before I put them up (specifically, 2 new ones I'm going to add not listed here in this thread and blue-c4d). Sorry for the delays .

I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you further than the above poster. As he says, it sounds to me like you installed the debian boot loader to the MBR instead of the debian root partition, [which grub2-gfxmenu would have overwritten when installed, if that guess is correct]. This can of course be fixed by livecd if you know how. However, this comment gives off an impression I should mention needs fixing, if correct. You should thank http://grub.gibibit.com/index Mr Colin Bennett here, he made the gfxmenu stuff, not anyone here. I had no part in its development, I only package it for Arch.
