Xine and PCM

I can't stand the gstreamer phonon backend, it's jumpy and amarok takes about five minutes to play a song, oddly
anyway, i switched to the xine-backend, and everything's good, but the volume of any audio that uses phonon (eg amarok, notifications etc) is unaffected when i adjust the volume of PCM. any help? ideally, i don't want to have to meddle with the master volume.
