Im using XFCE 4.2 now.. in 4.0 i removed the taskbar from the /opt/xfce/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc file by commenting out xtaskbar4..
#xftaskbar4&
xfdesktop&
xfcalendar &
ive done that with 4.2 and ive also commented it out in the /opt/xfce/etc/xdg/xfce-session/xfce-session.rc file
Client0_Command=xfwm4
Client0_PerScreen=False
Client1_Command=xfce4-panel
Client1_PerScreen=True
#Client2_Command=xftaskbar4
#Client2_PerScreen=True
Client3_Command=xfdesktop
Client3_PerScreen=False
atleast i think thats how they wanted it commented out..
the documentation isnt very helpful..
anyway... the taskbar still appears!!! GRRR!! i hate that damn thing..
what am i doing wrong?
btw.. anyone know of any good icon themes? 4.2's new icon standards follow gnomes crap way.. and it only has 1 working theme! grrrgakldjfkldjfa
4.0 was so much easier to create themes.. albeit only small ones

Kill the taskbar and save your session on logout.
For icons, start the settings manager, then user interface, then icon theme, choose crystal.

Did you do this:
pacman -S xfce4-session xfce4-icon-theme xfce4-appfinder
pacman -R xfce4-themes xffm-icons
as it is suggested on http://www.archlinux.org/news.php#131
Or perhaps you need some KDE packages for crystal icon themes. I don't know where xfce 4.2 gets these icons (this changed from 4.0) so I can't check which package owns those files.

I have a theme with the Crystal icons using the Industrial engine, if anyone is interested. Krystal Industry
You will probably also want the matching icon set from here: http://www.customize.org/details/33109 .

ive got all of those xfce4 packages.. i only installed arch after 4.2 was released..
im assuming its using the gnome themes.. so i guess ill just install those
its really annoying though.. i made my own tux'n'tosh theme for 4.0 since it was so easy to create themes.. but gnome icon themes are far from simple to create.. and there arent any tux'n'tosh icon themes for gnome.. atleast none ive seen...
