guys someone has a problem with suspend to ram option?
It works fine when I suspend first time, but doesn't when I suspend next time

Con got fixed it in the latest page.
It works now.

After trying NO_NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS among other tweaks I decided to give BFS a try. I really didn't believe the the hype surrounding BFS but, after multiple reboots between BFS and CFS, BFS was considerably more responsive.
FYI, this is on a Pentium M 740 1.73GHZ.

noticed my first real-world 'documentable' advantage today...
with default scheduler, full 1080p hd video in mplayer always yielded "your computer's too slow to play this!", stuttering, A/V out of sync-ness, and eventually freezing. with bfs, the same file is smooth and perfectly A/V synced at just 20% cpu. not a single frame lost, like night and day i tell ya. no placebo effect there. (i also had my usual other bunch of programs running while watching this video). maybe tomorrow i'll compile something at the same time .

Can you even prove your points or is this just random nonsense ?
I can remember benchmarks comparing different kernel versions, it definitely didn't show slower and slower kernels.
Nor did I ever notice that in my own experience. And of course, the kernel grows, and thanks god it grows, with all the hardware there is to support out there. But this does not affect a given system at all.

Wait. Quad core CPU is not enough to playback a 1080p video? What CPU do I need then? (Thinking about building a new rig that can do 1080p.)

If anything, It definately helps on hd video as brisbin said.
I use a fairly old barton 2500 and a few videos I have where the sound, subtitles and video were quickly out of sync and were very frustrating to watch with the break lines and lag, are playing pefectly now.
/edit these are 720p

My quad core (Q6600) handles most 1080p fine, including Blu-ray right off the disc. But not when the disk is thrashing -- BFS may fix that, I have yet to see.

Well it's not clear whether he is just saying that the kernel grows (which is inevitable), or that it also gets slower and slower. But anyway, that's just words, what I would like to see is detailed benchmarks and review.
And it is already covered there : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 54#p623854

i can finally test BFS here with release 240....it definately seems snapier watching youtuve videos in HD (something i cant do with CFS)
dont know how stable this is....

"My new kernel" does not say much. Is this the standard Arch kernel with standard config, but patched? Or did you write your own config? Or are you using zen-sources...?

Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it from within the new kernel... OSS needs to be relinked. Not sure if this fixes your problem but I had a similar issue that was fixed by doing the above.

This does fix it! Thanks!
@mutlu_inek: I used the config from 'zcat /proc/config.gz > config' then 'make oldconfig' and then compile with the 2.6.31-bfs, no additional patch (except for the ones come with 2.6.31-bfs of SpeedVin)
@SpeedVin: I don't use ALSA.

Well then, I really tried everything, tried bfs together with every i/o scheduler, but nothing compares to cfs here :-( I'm back on the repo kernel, it's simply the best!

Pentium-M 1600 Mhz, custom 2.6.31-2 kernel with bfs-303 patch: it's incredibly fast and responsive.
I am making a test with wine+emule, firefox, thunderbird, Apache and MySQL altogether and IT's WORKING LIKE A CHARM!
Without BFS everything is trashed, instead with the bfs-303 patch I have excellent responsiveness like if no application was open! Yes, I know, CFS wins the 2 pipes benchmark...who cares? Seems like I don't play with 2 racing pipes in my everyday usage...and yes, I compile stuff and make development, but I want as well a responsive machine.
Thank you Con, now I have back my computer power.

yes, benchmarks aside...i decideded after using BFS for a week to jump back to CFS and see if i noticed a difference (actually, i screwed up my kernel build and ended up with 2.6.31.2-CFS instead of BFS). i noticed something was amiss because it wasnt as snappy..
tbh, its amazing how fast this scheduler code stabilized from first release. there are still some small issues though, for example, compiz starts to lag after days of usage... restarting it fixes it..
one extra note, wireless speed jumped from 2.1mb/s throughput to 2.9mb/s (??) again, no benchmarks, just scp

Is kernel26-bfs + the nvidia driver stable?

yes, I'm using it with nvidia-beta. Never had problems. Neither did RT or tuxonice... the nvidia driver actually is pretty good with all. RT needs a patch though, its in the AUR (maintained by myself).
