Hi all,
I'm excited to say that this is my first post in the forums. I've used Ubuntu, switched to Gentoo, got tired of compiling everything from source so went back to Ubuntu, then got tired of not having any control of my system so I switched over to Arch...and I've never been happier.
Anyways, I have a quick question about getting launchy configured with chromium. Launchy has as Weby plugin that allows the user to launch websites from directly inside launchy but it doesn't seem to be working. It looks like Launchy tries to launch the url in a few different browsers first (ie firefox, opera, etc.) and then stops without every trying chromium. How do I set chromium to be the default browser for launchy?
As an additional question, I'm using openbox as my WM (love it!) but I'm having issues setting my default applications. Is there an easier way in Openbox to set default applications than by manually editing the ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list file?
Thanks,
Calvin

I'm not all that familiar with openbox, but you could try obconf for a GUI to openbox configuration. It might have what you want.

What programs are opening the files? I don't think openbox handles any of that stuff on its own, you'd probably have to edit the defaults list.

you normally do that in your filemanager. Rightclick e.g. a pdf file and chose properties. There you can set up your desired application.

Hi,
i had a similar problem. Chromium opens the downloaded files with xdg-open <file> (from xdg-utils package). The main problem of xdg-open is, it uses the enviroment variable DE (Desktop Environment). So, if you use a other WM then gnome oder kde, xdg-open uses the generic variable BROWER. I use thunar as filemanager and set "export DE=xfce" before starting chromium. With this i can open PDFs for example and of course other files directly from chromium after download.

I was actually just wondering how I could open PDF's from within chromium. I'm running Openbox as my WM. How do I specify which PDF viewer to use for chromium? (I'm using epdfview). Are you running xfce?

Oh weird if I run "xdg-open __.pdf" from the command line then the correct pdf viewer gets launched, but when I try to click on a recently downloaded pdf in chromium nothing happens. Any clues?

Hi Calvin,
i am using pekwm as windowmanager and thunar as filemanager. If i start chromium this way:
jayjay@gonzo ~ % export DE=xfce && chromium-browser
i can select in thunar with which progamm i want open a file after download in chromium.
In thunar, right click on a PDF file -> Settings -> Open with: epdfview (select your favorite viewer for this type)
A other important info: I am using the chromium-snapshot package from AUR.

you could add "export DE=xfce" to your .xinitrc and avoid having to launch the browser explicitly typing it each time.

Does anyone know how to emulate this behavior if you're using pcmanfm for your file manager instead of thunar?

Yeah thats something I'd also like to know. I'm sick of everything wanting to open in firefox when I'm not running a desktop environment =\
