The problem is that for the Apps / Shortcuts / System menus, if icons are enabled, icons are everywhere. If icons are disabled, icons are nearly everywhere except in a few places. That looks ugly.
I would prefer to have no icons at all rather than something in between.
I guess the behaviour is based on their Application / File or Bookmark / Device rule, but imho icons in that menu are ok and you can probably find an icon for everything in there, contrary to menu bar menus. I think splitting the icon option into several for different menus and allowing users to toggle betwenn no icons (what you want), some icons (new default) and many icons (old default) would make sense. But I don't think that will ever happen in Gnome.

Ok, currently it looks like it's a kernel bug with udev that is causing so much trouble with recognizing dvd's... Ubuntu karmic beta has the same problem...

Open your gconf-editor, go to: apps/metacity/general and hit the checkbox that says "compositing_manager".

You can also try mutter-git, the GNOME 2.3/3.0 version of metacity.

Because compositing in metacity is a very recent, slightly experimental addition. Translation, it was hacked on. The choice is made in upstream anyway, there's no reason all user should pay the performance cost when only some need composition. Those who want composition would probably use compiz ANYWAY.

I won't package empathy, as I don't want to maintain the telepathy stack myself. We pulled this into testing for 2.24, then never updated it and decided to drop it to community again, where people who use it can maintain it.

JGC I just wanted to say ty for all the work you do for the gnome and other packages. I would also like to extend a thank you to all the other package maintainers that make arch linux a great distro.

First, jgc, thanks for your great work!!
Today I decide to test gnome-unstable. My first impression is that it works well, except that the system usage seems to run at 100% all the time. That's a little bit strange because the apps largely response smooth. But the cpu must be in heavy use because the fan of my notebook works hard and the systemmonitor shows an cpu usage of 100%.
Top doesn't show which process consumes such a high portion of cputime. (I can post a screen of top here if desired).
Is this a known problem?

Read the thread from the beggining carefully
Type in terminal: killall metacity
I suppose you have compiz enabled right?

thanks for a superb job for you and your team even if that means just your right and left hand team
I would like to know though from you all the activate the gnome-unstable repo and testing. When do you comment them out again and just handle the base repos? I noticed a lot of version mismatches if I closed them off now. I'm guessing this is because gnome hasn't hit extra yet. Advice?

You don't need testing anymore with gnome-unstable, as I compiled gtk2 against cups in extra. I still haven't finished my todo-list, so this repository will not merge with extra yet.

I hope i haven't overlooked a hint this time.
When i hit the new mail button in evolution the app crashes. Related error messages are:

gtkhtml has a nullpointer dereference when you hit the backspace bug. I can reproduce it on i686, which makes evolution unusable for me. FreeBSD already has a patch for this.
Offline
what?
I can hit on the "new mail" button in evolution, works as expected. I can send mails normally.
by the way, I've installed gnome 2.28 this morning, and all seems to work perfect, except some packages out of the repo, for example, I have this error trying to start inkscape:
"inkscape: error while loading shared libraries: libpoppler.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
BTW, good work, as always, JGC.

When I comment out testing the following generates as nagware. With testing enabled the only things I have put on hold are kernel26 and poppler/glib and I get no nagware warnings.

Orange, pacman is just telling you that your locally installed version is higher than the version in the repos. Which it is, because the entire point of [testing] and [gnome-unstable] is to get you higher versioned software. Its not nagware .

Cool ngoonee. Just getting used to how ArchLinux rolls out a new edition of a DE/WM. I just wasn't expecting anything but my poppler and kernel holds when I read about gtk2 being upgraded. I don't know if it's the new Gnome, kernel hooks, acpi caught up or what, but I'm really jazzed that all my special buttons work now on my box that are not part of the regular keyboard strokes. I can finally adjust my screen brightness and volume levels without a specific application.
