arch, a windows knockoff?

Recently there was an article about Arch on osnews.com and I was browsing through the comments and noticed this as part of the guys comment. "With that said, I have to say that Arch Linux is definitely the most Windows-like Linux knockoff available." I don't know if I find this offending or not, it defiantly wasn't expected when I was reading through there. Other people that made comments after this guy were wondering the same thing I am. How would you see Arch as a "Windows knockoff". Let me tell you, I use linux because I like it and I hate windows and I don't really see Arch as a windows knock off maybe a distro like SuSE or Mandrake or Redhat could be classified as that. I don't know, tell me if I'm making a big deal outta nothing. I just found it intresting. lol

I think he doesn't understand that Linux doesn't aspire to be Windows because Linux is already better.

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

Again yep.

Arch CAN be similar, but I wouldn't dare compare Arch to windows. Perhaps with KDE/Gnome installed the environment could seem similar...

Whatever.

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

Err, WTF was this guy smoking? Arch is not even targeted at Linux newbies! If all I had ever used before was Windows and I jumped straight into Arch I'd probably be pretty frustrated for the first little bit until I leaned about startup scripts and such. Arch aims to be simple yet powerful. What part of having no GUI config tools does this guy not understand.  Geez, I'm typing this from a Windows box right now and I can tell you that it's nothing like Arch. IMHO, Arch is much more like Slackware than Windows. This is an attribute that first attracted me to Arch.

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

I agree.
Arch is nice and simple.
There is NOTHING simple about windows.  From the abomination that is the registry to the absolutely rigid user interface, Windows is a complex beast.
Also, Arch is powerful, reasonably stable, fast, and easy to work with.
Windows is NONE of those things.
This guy was clearly not thinking ... clearly.
Could we get a link to the article?

lol
How many of you people that are posting derrogatory things have actually read the article?

In fact, the above quotation was one of the people who posted a comment to the article. Not the article author himself. It was just some moron who thought he was being clever. Guess what? He isn't! He probably never used the distribution. He was likely referring to Ark instead of Arch. See what happens when you don't do your research?

Anyway, here is the article link, in printer friendly format.

and in normal format.

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

I also seem to have read the quoted comment in a different way than the rest of you  - I understood it like this:

Arch Linux is definitely the Linux knockoff that is most Windows-like

And the proof that the guy knows very little is right there in the middle. There is no such thing as a Linux knockoff! The concept of knockoffs belongs in the commercial, closed-source world, where it means that someone copies or plagiarises someone else's closely guarded secret to make money.

Linux is already available to anyone who wants it, under the GPL, so it can't be knocked-off. If I had the time and expertise, I could develop and release TKLinux - I wouldn't be knocking anyone off, anymore than Ubuntu has knocked off Debian.

<edit>
P.S. Why is this thread sticky? Interesting, possibly, but hardly essential reading...IMO.

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

i haven't read this whole thread as i only have one thing to say, and i am going to swear:

how the fuck can arch be anything like windows?  when you boot arch for the first time you get a login screen, no gui, hardly any (if any) gui pkgs installed at all.  how the FUCK is that anything like windows?

now if he had said mandrake, which is gui out of the box with loads of wizards and all sorts of shit then yes, i could see his point.

this guy has obviously seen screenshots of arch where people like me have put hours of time and effort into making it look good and thinks Arch does that out of the box?

Re: arch, a windows knockoff?

Thanks cactus for clarifying the situation. I fear that I will be hunted with dogs thanks to that prat who made the infamous Windows/ArchLinux connection.

I am the author of the article. Rest assured that I in NO WAY compared ArchLinux to Windows (or any other distro for that matter).  I couldn't even if I wanted to - which I don't!

As the article stated, I've been a Linux user for 8 or so years, with the last 5 having Linux as my primary OS. (Windows does exist primarily for games) Although, I would still not consider myself competent.

Anyway, if was some twit who wrote the first comment to the article; he in fact went a bit looney and somehow inferred that because I happened to mention that "The main difference between Kopete and Gaim that I have noticed is that Kopete obviously integrates better with KDE.", that AL is therefore a Windows knockoff! Idiot.

That's what that is?  Man, lmbo.  When you first changed that thing, and I saw it for the first time, I thought you were some kind of chain smoker or something.  I thought your avatar was from one of those old era movie theater commercials showing a dancing pack of "menthols".  The joke's on me this time...

It is from a blur music video, if I remember correctly. Either that or Eels. *scratches head*
It was about a milk carton that was lost, and trying to find someone.

The carton is the central character from the video of Coffee and TV by Blur (on the album 13). He falls for a lady milk carton. Aww, bless.
