post your entire /etc/rc.conf
as well as your /etc/modprobe.conf
maybe there is just a typo somewhere causing the snafu.
If you don't want to post them in the forum, you can pm me with the contents..

Thanks again, lucke.
And now, apologies to all who are reading as it seems i've wasted your time. I had a phat typo in modprobe. Called it 'etho vs 'eth0 . Sorry.
Now, on boot up, I noticed the previous message I saw, in red letters, as it rolled by to fast, is fixed, and I can immediately ping archlinux.org
But, I'm still going round in circles with pacman. 'pacman -Su' gives "cound not open sync database: extra have you used --refresh yet?"
'pacman --refresh' doesn't say anything.
And finally,
'pacman -Sy'
WHOOPS - something just happened. Looks like actual pacman operation. Cool.
Time for me to review and think. If there is another problem, I think it will be under a new Subject.
Once again, I thank you all for your kind help!
John Schuster

what you want is
pacman -Syu
that updates and synchs with the current stuff.
enjoy your arch now that you are workin'

No questions here - just a progress report.
Have run pacman several times and am now in the middle of a 90Meg sync.
THIS IS AMAZING.
I do this type of stuff for a living on another OS.
Ten checks, 20 upgrades, another 20 upgrades - cant read and type that fast!!
Anyway - no need to answer, I'm gonna go try to get a GUI up.
Thanks all again!
