alsamixer refuses to run, libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so is missing

I am trying to run alsamixer OR amixer to adjust my volume, but its giving me fits. It says it can't find libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so, which I know is installed and where it expects, as I did research and found it was in alsa-plugins, and I explicitly checked with ls to make sure it was there. The exact error I get is:

ALSA lib control.c:867:(snd_ctl_open_conf) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

Could this be happening because I had to use alsaconf to get my soundcard working? How do I get rid of this error? I have tried recompiling alsamixer/amixer, and checking the config files. Neither gives any clues.

I've seen topics for it in the skype forum, but none for alsamixer or amixer, which is why I asked here.
