This may be really dumb, but how do you pronounce "Arch

I was just telling my friend who knows more about linux than me that I'm giving Arch Linux (rhymes with March) a try. He corrected me and said, "it's pronounced "Ark" linux (as in Noah's Ark"). He said that he was pretty sure that Arch was short for "architecture", because this distribution is for i686 architecture. So, how do you pronounce Arch?

Re: This may be really dumb, but how do you pronounce "Arch

I've thought about that recently, especially as I'm not a native speaker and pronouncation can surely sometimes be tricky for me. One thing I can tell is that it surely isn't Ark, as Ark Linux is the name of the other distro :-) I came to conclusion that it's pronounced just like in march, as you said, or as in archbishop. Generally it's not an issue comparable to the problem of the pronouncation of SUSE :-)

I guess I should have done a search for "pronounce" before I posted this... Sorry, didn't think of it till now.

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … =pronounce

Xentac (package maintainer) says, "Arch, like the golden arches. Archer, Archibald, Archie... It is not pronounced like ark.

A good way to think of it is mentioned in the docs... or a review or interview or something... Arch comes from arch nemesis."

Isn't it strange that 'Arch' linux says its a distro for people with knowledge about linux systems, and 'Ark' linux is about "people without prior Linux experience"(as written on their website).

Well, since the Archlinux logo is an arch and not a big boat, I sort of assumed it was pronounced that way smile

well, i prefer to call it "ark" instead of "arch" or "archlinux" because in german "arch" sounds a lot like "arsch" which means butt (for the non-germans here) :-) :-)

imagine some sentences like this one: "i'll tweak my arch this evening" ;-)

Don't know what you mean. It is as far away from german language as "Smörebröd" and "will tu knulla met mey" is away from swedish, I think.  big_smile

Btw, once I used BeOS, there was a small, funny game that was named "BeShissen". Well, sounds like "beschissen" in german ears, what means "crappy", "shitty". But hey, the game was really nice!

Reminds me of a rumour, that the "Fiat Punto" in finnland was understood as "Fiat bitch"....

Alright, my german isn't that god tongue

Fiat launched a car called "Het Fitta" in sweden once, that means like "hot p*ssy" tongue
