Garbled text in man pages

Here is a sample of what I get when I run man ls:

^[[1mNAME^[[0m
       ls - list directory contents

^[[1mSYNOPSIS^[[0m
       ^[[1mls ^[[22m[^[[4mOPTION^[[24m]... [^[[4mFILE^[[24m]...

^[[1mDESCRIPTION^[[0m
       List information about the FILEs (the current directory by default).  Sort entries alphabetically if none of ^[[1m-cftuSUX ^[[22mnor ^[[1m--sort^[[22m.

Also, man seems to depend on most as its pager, but the package itself does not. I had to install most manually. I don't think it's a problem with most, as using it to view files works fine. I only get this jibberish when I run man. I've tried "export LESS="-R" (the only tip I could find on these forums) with no success.

Any thoughts?

do an

export

and see what hops out. If you are using bash at least. Looks to me like there is something wrong with your TERM var, or you charset, or your lang.

I'm using zsh. I'll see if bash fixes it when I get home.

I think man can also read the PAGER env var, so you could force it to

PAGER="less -R"

see if that helps...

The problem was located in my .zshrc file.

export MANPAGER="most"

Changed it to "less -r" and it works fine now. Thanks for the help cactus and phrakture.
