Hello again. I seem to have new problems, now with my Intel HDAudio sound card. This is a laptop sound card; I feel I should stress this one because many people claim it's an important piece of information.
This is pretty much the only HDA sound card I've ever owned, so please bear with me and correct me if I have any misconceptions regarding it.
I've been using OSS 4.1 for some time now, and after updating to OSS 4.2 the sound just doesn't work anymore.
I've removed OSS 4.1, deleted the /usr/lib/oss directories. When I try to run the oss daemon, I get the following message:
/usr/sbin/soundon: line 174: 3010 Killed /sbin/modprobe $n $OPTIONS
Loading module oss_hdaudio failed - ignored
And when trying to unload it, it gets stuck here:
:: Stopping Open Sound System [BUSY]
No mixers in the system
I can Ctrl+C this one, but it doesn't do any good - the daemon is still running and it basically freezes my system if I try to shutdown or restart, because it tries to unload the daemon at that point, and that just gets stuck.
If anyone could help me shed some light on this issue, I'd be very grateful.
P.S. I've tried ALSA as well, but all that works is the "analog" output, and my card is seen as nVidia HDMI. Is this normal?
What would you guys recommend for this soundcard, anyway? ALSA or OSS?
Thanks in advance!
Only the best is good enough.

Looks like a kernel panic when soundon tries to load an OSS module. Please post the output of "dmesg" when you've run soundon and the output of "lspci -v".

Okay, it's in the 'bin: dmesg and lspci.
edit: just tried running soundoff... and, well, dmesg output hasn't changed. If that means anything to you.
BTW, thanks for the swift reply!

Remove the oss package and reinstall it from source (oss is in the community ABS tree). If that doesn't help, you can contact the OSS developers at http://www.opensound.com/forum. They may be able to help you as your problem looks like a driver bug to me.

Will do, and will post the results here. Thanks!
