after upgrading to kernel 2.6.31, scrolling in firefox, (and I just checked, also in GIMP, Midori, and Open Office, pretty much anything that scrolls) is slow and choppy.
my system used to work fine in kernel 2.6.30, and I haven't changed anything else that may have caused this. any ideas? or anybody else having the same problem?

awesome, maybe I should try reading the front page news before I start panicking. I've fixed the problem, my ATI chipset is too new to use KMS so I disabled it by appending "nomodeset" to the kernel line of my /boot/grub/menu.lst thanks foutrelis

The "fix" doesn't work for me.
I tried adding both "nomodeset" and "radeon.modeset=0" to menu.lst, as well as blacklisting the radeon module and rebuilding the initramfs.
Scrolling is still a pain in the ass.

Mo, try running htop and sort programs by IO. You might have to add that column, of course.
In my case, firefox was trashing the drive even though I compiled it without safe browsing support. As of now the only thing closest to a solution has been moving my profile to a tmpfs. This lowers IO to zero, reduces CPU and stops lagging the computer.

Actually I downgraded to 2.6.30 again and it works.
I think I will wait for a clean solution but thanks for the help .
