Hi. I have a strange problem. I have an external harddisk, and I can use it until last kernel update. After kernel 2.6.31 update, it can not be seen in /dev, and I can not monunt it. Strange thing is that, another distro can see and mount it. Please help. Thanks in advance..ED]

I have the same problem. USB sticks, cameras aren't properly detected anymore.
I thought it was the new kernel 2.6.31.4-1 that caused the problem, but downgrading to 2.6.30 doesn't help.
I get this error message when I plug in an USB:

There were a bunch of packages in today's pacman -Syu, the culprit must be among those but which one?

The same here.
I've just upgraded and can not mount the USB HDD anymore. First I got frightened that my external HDD died, but luckily found this thread.
Hoping for a quick fix.

I was just about to post the same issue. I have three external drives, and only one of them presents this problem.
There are lot's of "usb 1-5.2: device not accepting address 8, error -71" in dmesg.log
If it could possibly make a difference, the two drives I have that work are IDE->USB and the one that doesn't is SATA->USB.

Solution (for me at least):
Upgrading to the latest version of libatasmart solved the problem for me. Get it from AUR or wait until it's pushed to [extra].

Yes. Upgrading libatasmart package solves my problem too. Thanks.

I can only find the libatasmart-git package in AUR. The link to the aur package (provided by testube_babies) also does not work. Strange...
I will try to build the newer libatasmart package with ABS.
Update: after building libatasmart 0.15 with ABS (copying the PKGBUILD for 0.14 and modifying the version and the checksum) the USB HDD works well! Thanks for the hint!

I've found that changing the vfat into auto in fstab does the trick, at least for me:
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbstick auto rw,noauto,async,user 0 0

Installing libatasmart-git from AUR fixed this issue for me (500Gb ext3 external HD). Putting auto in fstab did not help.

That's the way mine is setup and they all worked, but I still had some strange issues with them so I reverted to an older kernel and all works properly again.

Same here. Just upgrade the package. This issue is there for Ubuntu as well. My friend was telling me about it.

(Solution summed up in last post.)
I hope that helps! Seems to be related.

First I can not mount my USB HD. I have tried bot git and ABS version, both worked. Now I can mount (automatically in Gnome) USB HD. However, it is mount as read only
. Anybody else having similar issue?
No. It is not mount as read only. But having problem with codepage. I have been using UTF-8 in ntfs, now it seems I can't ![]()

I think you have to install ntfs-3g to write on NTFS.
Although yesterday it caused Win XP to force a disk check on startup. (Long enough to be unacceptable on each boot.)
And it's NOT even the partition Windows is installed on.
And i had only renamed some files.
Still have to look into that...
