Appearance Settings for mouse cursor and "root"

First off I am new to arch, and must say I appreciate the stability (firefox +flash is a dream compared to ubuntu big_smile)
Now to the problem:
I just yesterday set up gnome and gdm.Today I tried to liven up the looks and tried installing some mouse cursor themes,by the simple drop-onto-AppearanceMenu-method,but the theme did not appear in the pointer themes list.I tried again and saw an error that it could not create new dir over existing dir.
So I did some (re)search and was atleast able to set up one cursor theme as the default theme following the arch wiki. Now my problem is why wouldn't the cursor theme list with the pre installed themes (coz it sure was installed in my .icons folder) ? I tried as root as well as GDM (by the way how do you install GDM themes here?) but to no avail ,the problem was exact same ...

Oh and one similar problem, any changes to appearance in root's settings don't seem to hold ,I mean change appearance ,close the menu and BAM it's reset. Is this some default behaviour or what??
Any explanation or solution would be much appreciated.
