OSS 4.2_2000-2 not working.

Hello.
When I start OSS I got:

Relinking OSS kernel modules for "{My_Kernel} SMP preempt mod_unload "
This may take few moments - please stand by...

OSS build environment set up for REGPARM kernels

    gcc
    make
    binutils

Error: The above Linux package(s) seem to be missing from your system.
Please install them and then try to install OSS again.

Please refer to the documentation of your Linux distribution if you
have problems with installing the packages.

Relinking the OSS kernel modules failed

I got all of these installed and working smile
Thanks for help smile
BTW. I removed /usr/lib/oss too (After that I tried recompiling oss but sitll don' work) smile

Re: OSS 4.2_2000-2 not working.

Maybe similar problem here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82393
All I can say is that it works fine here.

Using arch64 and fully up-to-date system.

Edit:
Forgot to say I have recompiled oss with a small patch that makes my usb headset work just a little better, so recompiling isn't a problem here.
Before that I did update to the oss in the repos and everything went well.

Re: OSS 4.2_2000-2 not working.

Maybe your audio codec/controller is not included in oss anymore because it is quite old or rare, also if everything works properly with an older oss maybe you can downgrade and tell pacman to leave it alone (although I can understand the addiction of pacman -Syu and have everything up-to-date tongue ).

Edit:
Somewhat similar/related problem here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79679

Re: OSS 4.2_2000-2 not working.

I don't know about FREEBSD/PCBSD but didn't they just continue the development of the original OSS on their own (I know someone has done that)? If so you may not be comparing the same thing.

Re: OSS 4.2_2000-2 not working.

I did a quick look around and it seems that FREEBSD/PCBSD are using the same oss you can download, compile and install. I had the idea that someone (besides the maintainer of the current oss) had continued the development of the code that was free and improved it ... maybe I was wrong ... so many discussions *cough* rants *cough* around the net about alsa vs oss may have confused me.

If alsa works fine for you go for it, as people say, whatever floats your boat tongue if the boat floats better with alsa it's the right choice.

Ok like I said it's not a problem for me to use ALSA (one more + argument is that , that ALSA is better supported on Linux).
And thanks to this there is one more argument to try alternavite apps.
