no internal subtitles in mplayer

I haven't found out how to get mplayer show internal subtitles. I got some nice episodes of Kenshin and Evangelion (zx releases in ogg media .ogm and matroska .mkv container) that plays almost perfectly in all respects, except that I get no subs. I used pacman -S mplayer, and let it install all deps, and also tried to set the font path, but nothing works.

Media Player Classic gives me subs automatically, and I expected mplayer to work the same way.

Re: no internal subtitles in mplayer

For containers files, I use kaffeine. mplayer seems to still suck at ogm, mkv or dvds, but kaffeine handles it just well.

Re: no internal subtitles in mplayer

Thanks for the quick reply. But kaffeine is KDE/QT right? I prefer to use XFce, which is the reason I chose mplayer. Well, if the dependencies for kaffeine isn't too bulky I might give it a try.

Re: no internal subtitles in mplayer

It depends on kdelibs, it seems. You could also seek some other xine front-end (xine-ui?), but, sorry, won't help you with that, as I'm not a xine expert  :-)

Just checked. xine-ui works well with OGM. And it doesn't depend on anything special.

Re: no internal subtitles in mplayer

kaffeine is yet another frontend for xine-lib or am i wrong? any way, xine-ui using GTK (i think) lets you watch movies with subtitles and audio-layers in OGM just fine. mplayer i must say sux, there are better player on X11. wink

Re: no internal subtitles in mplayer

Well, now I have tried Kaffeine and it works a little bit better than mplayer. At least I can switch audio and subs easily. But it's a frontend for xine-lib, and I think Xine is a bit strange/annoying especially when it comes to some settings. And also that it is a QT/KDE app, and I mostly use XFce. It works allright but I don't like how look like in KDE...
