Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

I installed ArchLinux not long ago (yesterday morning). I'm relatively new to Linux, although I have been running a Slackware 10 system for a few months, so I don't have much knowledge of the system as of yet.

The PC I installed ArchLinux on was - 1.4 Ghz Celeron, 512 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, and an integrated Intel Graphics card. (The PC was a thin-client for a wireless company before I got it, so it has no floppy/cd-rom drive).

The install method I used was to take the HDD out of the PC, put it into one of my other "main" boxes and install, then I returned the HDD to the original PC and booted up. I configured everything after boot to match the hardware capabilties of the PC I was running it on, and not the PC I used to setup on. However, I'm having a couple of problems I'm not sure how to troubleshoot on my own.

:: First, eth0 won't connect. It is there, it is configured, it seems to work fine (no problems that I can see).. but trying to ping anything aside from local results in "connect: Network is unreachable". I'm willing to give any other information needed by anyone who wishes to help me with this problem, so if more is needed (ifconfig output or something) feel free to ask.

:: Next, when starting X my PC goes into a full system freeze - completely comatose, no response to num-lock, etc - sometimes it shows scrambled pictures (as if the horisontal or vertical sync was set too high, but it's not), and other times it just goes into a complete black-screen.

:: Boot time errors:

Starting Hotplug Daemon: [BUSY]

can't load module shpchp
missing kernel or user mode driver shpchp

Not sure what that means either, like I said I am new to linux.

Sorry for the trouble, and thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Re: Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

hello,
for your network there is a wikipage called "static ip and dhcp" that might help,

X trouble can be lots of things:

mouse is not set to /dev/input/mice
lo is not up,
something wrong in xorg.conf,
bios problem if you got buitin graphics,

hope something helps,   big_smile

Re: Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

I'll try setting up my network using rc.conf (as in the wiki page you described). Thanks.

I setup xorg.conf using 'xorgconfig' (chose the same things I did for Slackware configuration, so I'm not sure why it's still freezing up). Guess I'll try to edit it manually and see if anything's wrong there.

Thanks again for the reply.  big_smile

EDIT: Thanks, I screwed around with rc.conf and got it to work! Tytytyty!  big_smile

` One problem to go. ^^

Re: Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

If X freezes when you try to start it, the problem is usually located with your mouse device - use /dev/input/mice instead of whatever you use now smile

Re: Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

Okay, I messed with it and X no longer freezes the PC. (It doesn't load either, but this is a step up imo since it gives errors -Yay errors!-)

Re: Couple problems (eth0/X GUI) -Fixed, for now-

Are you sure you're using the appropriate module for your VGA? "No screens" usually means that no screens matching the loaded module (as configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) are found.

Regarding your networking problem: what kind of network are you in? Are you using DHCP / static IP? Can you post the output of "ifconfig eth0"?

The network problem was fixed.

I'll try lower settings for the graphics card and see if that works (I tried changing /dev/mouse, didn't help much - same errors).

EDIT: Nevermind, it loaded into X then froze as soon as I tried to do anything.

*sigh* Step forward, I guess?

Paste you /etc/X11/xorg.conf and your entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

How can I do that?

Been using a seperate PC to post, not sure how long it'd take me to type the entire xorg.conf file.

If you're running SSH on the Linux machine, you could copy the files to a Windows box using WinSCP.

Of you could copy them to a floppy, a shared partition, an FTP-server, ...

What do you have at your disposal?

The PC has no floppy or CD-rom drives, I'll try to set it up and login through SSH and see what I can do there.. though I'm not too familiar with it.
