Hi there,
I saw in the in the wiki Beginners Guide, that there was several lines about fvwm, but nowhere else. So I thought it would be nice to create a good wiki article about it. Actually, I have started it - FVWM.
Feel free to edit and express your opinion about it. It would be nice to have a good help for newbies. And yes, I know, that man pages are very good and will answer most of the questions (if not all). But still, the information ammount is too vast for the mind of newbie.

Very nice. This is greatly appreciated, as I am intending to use FVWM one of these days.

It's a nice start. I don't know how extensive you want to make it (you could probably write a whole book about it..) but maybe some fvwmbuttons, swallowing, decoration tips are nice. And don't forget the thumbnailing, there is some c-code for it available somewhere on the web which does a pretty good job.
One more thing, I saw you copied most/all of it from Thomas, maybe give him a note about it if you haven't done so already. If you can't find his e-mail adress, he's a member of this forums (just search some older fvwm threads), you can send him an e-mail via his user account.

OK... I will. I just wrote that this is material of Thomas, so that the real author of this work would be known.
About thumbnails... I remember some site, where code of thumbnailing was really effective and it felt that it was like a native fvwm function. If I find it again, I'll put it in wiki.
BTW, I am not a guru of FVWM... so some modules and possibilities of them are unknown to me still... Therefore, it would be great if others with more knowledge could contribute a bit...

Out of google cache: http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache:jwb … en&ct=clnk
PEM's modifications are available here: http://pemarchandet.free.fr/fvwm/004/index.html
those should you help on the way. if you need help with them you can send me an e-mail.

Thank you. Just found PEM's modifications too... I've been using PEM's work some time ago... But that google cache gave me some ideas. I will check these modifications out...

Nice work. I could really use a wiki/compressed information on FVWM. (I'm not really a new user, been using it for a few months now, but I'm definitely a stupid user.)
One thing I think you should add is documentation on the extra features in the patched version. Back when I first set up fvwm, you could still read the homepage of the fvwm patches on Google cache or wayback, and I wrote my config with that. But now I can't seem to find it anywhere. It is probably still on wayback if it was there, but I can't remember what the site was.
The thing is, those patches are almost becoming Arch exclusives now, because they are included themselves in the AUR (I don't think they can be found anywhere else), and I don't know any other distro that supplies them. (Then again, I don't know much about other distros.)
Ahh, wait, the website that had the info on the patches is here http://abdn.ac.uk/~u15dm4/fvwm/
It is down, but wayback still has it: http://web.archive.org/web/200709120611 … 5dm4/fvwm/
Hmm, it seems some other patches were taken from: http://jesgue.homelinux.org/fvwm-files/fvwm.php (and other places maybe) However the tarballs (that I guess have the documentation) are down on wayback too, so I don't know where the documentation for those patches would be. Does anyone know?

I don't think so -- it's completely peripheral to FVWM per se.

So what you're saying is "I don't know". :) That's fine, it's a shorter thing to say, too. :) Actually, they're included in some distros, but not all -- and oddly enough for the good reason that most of the patches banded around suck, and cause some stability problems.

No, this is hideously old, and outdated -- even if it were up, the patches referenced there don't even apply -- the ones shipped as part of the Genpoo ebuild are kept up to date by hand.

Stop looking on the wayback machine. :)

I don't see the harm in it. He said that the man pages are vast etc, and I was thinking about information that wouldn't be in the man pages, add on to the fact that it is fairly Arch-specific (or so I thought), so it should deserve a place in the Arch wiki.
The wiki page also shows how to install the patched version, it isn't completely ignoring it. I'm sure a lot of people would see that and wonder what the patched version has to offer.

Well, I have no clue where the updated patch documentation is (does it exist?). I'm talking about this: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=7195
and in the description/comments it shows those sites. Not sure if this is the same as the Genpoo (Gentoo?) ebuild you are talking about.

You want the ones from Jesus Guerrero. The ones found on here:
http://jesgue.homelinux.org/fvwm-files/fvwm.php
... and the ones used with Gentoo. They're the same.

Oh I see. I got a 404 error from that link the first time I tried it (see, it was in my above post), so I assumed the site was down. I assumed that when you mentioned it in your first post you were talking about how you shouldn't use wayback or something. ("http://jesgue.homelinux.org/fvwm-files/fvwm.php" is a 404 error now, but there is a page on wayback.)
Though now I tried "http://jesgue.homelinux.org/fvwm-files/" and indeed there are files there.
