I created a new partition totaling 29.7GB in size. I then created a physical volume using pvcreate and added it to volume group archvol. Now it says the total size is 27.62. What happened to the 2GB?

Maybe nothing. What tool told you the partition was 29.7 GB, and what tool says the total size is now 27.6? That's quite close to what I would expect if the first measurement used powers of 10 (1 GB = 1000000000 bytes) and the second powers of 2 (1 GB = 1073741824 bytes).

parted said it was 29.7, vgdisplay said it was 27.6
