Beginner Buffer Overflows

So I want to begind developing buffer overflows for the purpose of security research.  I took a stab at in in Ubuntu and couldn't get the security functions turned off despite reading a few tutorials.  Has anyone used Arch as aplatforum for developing security exploits.  I could use some pointers on where to begin setting up my machine so that I can do this for practice and educational purposes.

LOL well to be totaly honest I have this sort of self righteous vibe going on right now because I'm using Arch and it makes me feel like an elite Linux guy so I was hopeing that I would be able to do it from here.

You are not the first one to sugest that to me though maybe I should look into it with virtual box or something.

Backtrack advertises itself as being used for that express purpose.  Even better, it's based upon Slackware, so you could keep your precious elitism intact tongue

Re: Beginner Buffer Overflows

Well see, from my point of view, you'll learn more about insecure systems if you aren't the one who produced them, so backtrack and dvl are nice live systems to work and learn with, when it's about security.
