GRUB 2 stable?

Is it safe to use GRUB2 at the moment? Or should I wait?

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

I've been using it for the last 8 to 10 months and haven't had any problems with it at all.

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

Installing it was the biggest hassle for me, but now I'm running on a GPT drive with grub embedded in the bios_grub partition.

Sorry, that was out of my knowledge. GPT? bios_grub partition? smile

No problem, I had to do some reading to get it all working too.

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

We have a wiki page on it for anyone that should need it:

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

Whenever I tried to install it to MBR, it failed, so wiki didn't help me.  I asked and apparently I was the only one so I didn't edit it.

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

The only problem I have had with grub2 was framebuffers.  I opened a thread about this some months ago, you can find it at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73263, along with workarounds that worked for some people (I still, due to lack of time, have grub1, which works fine).  Apart from that issue it was quite pleasant and not much hassle at all.  YMMV.

Since RAID isn't available when GRUB loads, you'll need a simple bootup partition (100mb or so) in a format that GRUB can handle like ext2.

Those of you using GRUB2... I tried it briefly with Ubuntu and found there were some odd delays in the bootup process. You'd see 'loading grub', and then about 30 seconds of disk thrashing before it found stage 1.5 and gave you the menu. Has anyone had that issue in Arch?

Re: GRUB 2 stable?

I'm pretty sure there is no stage 1.5 in GRUB2, but I have never seen the thrashing problem you speak of.

GRUB2 supports LVM and raid: http://grub.enbug.org/LVMandRAID

If you are using GRUB2, you need to have the gap at the start of your disk where it installs to, so your RAID does not matter.
