Hard Drive Error-Detection Tool

I had heard somewhere about a free utility which will write junk data to a hard drive, read the sector it just wrote to, and instruct the hard drive to disable that sector if any flaws are detected.  Does anyone know where I can get this tool?  I've had three hard drive failures in the past year, two of which were because of bad sectors.

Did you look at your hdd vendors website? Vendors often provide tools for testing their hard drives.
