XFCE4 freezes. Kmix at fault?

I'm a relatively new Arch user (2 months) in addition to using Slack and Mepis.  This is far and away the best distro I've used.  My problem is that XFCE4 freezes on boot.  I notice that it stops booting when it tries to run Kmix.  The last time I successfully used XFCE4, I was playing a CD and tried to set the volume.  Now, when I boot, I get as far as "Starting Kmix" and then the screen goes to a grey weave pattern.  At this point, all I can do is get a console and reboot.  KDE works fine.  XFCE4 runs fine as root.  I've searched for answers both in these forums and on the web.  I would really like to keep using XFCE4, so I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I don't know much about KDE but have you tried disabling Kmix, if that's possible? Since XFCE comes with xfce4-mixer...

Kill kmix when xfce is loading. If that doesn't help, backup your ~/xfce4 and ~/.config/xfce4* dirs, then remove them before logging into xfce.
