The Magic Smoke Just Escaped My Laptop.

So, I booted into Arch this morning, and I tried logging in, but my keyboard was non-responsive.

Hmmm ...

I rebooted. The laptop (a Dell D630) wouldn't POST. Okay. Not good.

I tried several different power supplies and wall sockets, with and without the battery. No dice.

As I was replacing the battery, my spidey-sense began to tingle. I decided to smell the battery.
Nothing is quite as pungent as burnt electronics. It's the smell that just keeps giving.

I'm just glad it's my work laptop.

The Magic Smoke Just Escaped My Laptop.

Did you catch it?  If so, stuff it back in!   That's what makes all electronics run!

Seriously though, glad it's your work machine.  Hopefully they've got a good policy for replacing that kind of stuff.

Unfortunately, I was unable to capture enough of the smoke in time.

I've got my hard drive, but I've been unable to measure its current magic smoke pressure yet.

We've got stacks of D630s, I'm hoping to get a new one as soon as the desktop support guy returns from his rounds.

Re: The Magic Smoke Just Escaped My Laptop.

That's what you get for leaving Arch. Arch can feel when the hardware has been smitten by unclean kernels.
