Is there a way to install arch linux to a flash drive - not just as a live usb, as in you can make changes and the changes will be kept after the system has rebooted?

Well, I imagine you'd boot the live CD, then mount the flash drive and install as normal (but using it rather than the hard drive).
A question easily answered by attempting, methinks...

I use Arch off a USB, and it works great. Just be sure to add 'usb' to your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf hooks.

Have a look at larch: http://larch.berlios.de/ . It allows you to put a customized version of arch on a USB stick, and it uses squashfs to store the filesystem. Which translates into (a) more space and (b) longer lifespan of your stick.

When you make changes to the larch system, are they saved?

Larch has a "save" function...it also runs in ram which makes it faster. It uses aufs to allow overlays and the overlays are then "saved".
Read the available docs on Larch which are available at berlios.de. Any post by the larch admin gives the url, (Gradgrind).

When I use larch it has an error:
ERROR: No aufs or unionfs module found
What should I do? (I'll repost this in another post if needed)

Post your problem in a larch post...use search for larch.
